Season Two Marathon. Not the “best of” but rather what Char and Tristan believe would make an amazing five-episode stretch for a lazy Saturday afternoon. In this episode of To The Journey we talk about everything from Q to sentient robots bent on taking over the universe! But this is just our list. We’d love for you to head over to our forums and contribute your own Voyager Season-Two marathon extravaganzas! |

Seska. She wasn’t a main character, but Seska caused a lot of trouble for the Voyager crew. In this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan discuss all things about the Cardassian who initially hid behind a Bajoran mask, from her impulsive alliance with Maje Culluh to post-mortem appearances in seasons three and seven. Oh, and let’s not forget all the things she did to Chakotay. Listen on as Char and Tristan dissect this master manipulator. |

The 37s Commentary. The 37s. Has a nice ring to it doesn’t it? Char may disagree. In this episode of To The Journey Tristan and Char bring you an audio commentary for Voyager’s Season Two opener. Tristan loves this episode and Char hates it. Download and watch the hijinks ensue. Please remember to post on the forums in response to this episode because a lot of questions are asked! |

Season One Marathon. Regular listeners know that TTJ loves its lists. And in this episode of To The Journey Char and Tristan combine that with another favorite thing—Voyager marathons. Char insists that any season one marathon must begin with “Caretaker,” and Tristan raves about “Jetrel,” which told the backstory of his favorite Talaxian. Listen on and find out which other season-one episodes made their lists! |

Dealing with the end of Voyager. How do you cope with the loss of a great show? In this episode of To The Journey Char and Tristan answer that very question in this week’s episode. Voyager ended with what some might call a “fizzle” as opposed to a “bang.” So where do you go from there? Marathons? Novels? Comics? Audiobooks? Fanfic? Garage reenactments where nothing weird is going to happen? Listen and find out. |

Voyager. Our Ship. From the first moment we saw her docked at Deep Space 9, we all knew Voyager was different than any ship we’d seen before. Learning about her technical specs and seeing her do cool things—like actually landing on a planet—made us like her more and more. In this episode of To The Journey we turn our attention to Voyager, our lovely ship. Charlynn thinks she turned out just right, Tristan thinks she’s sexy (from the other side of the room’s discussion), and Lorrie thinks she’s aerodynamic. Any way you look at her, she’s perfect for the show. What did you think of the little ship that could? |
Wed, 6 November 2013
Workforce Rewrite. Don’t you hate it when Input Error 415 and Command Code Violation 2308 ruin your day at the office? So do we. And we’re going to do something about it. In this episode of To The Journey we rewrite of the lovely two-parter “Workforce.” We take the lukewarm show and try to inject some life into it. Tristan turns the work planet into a gulag, Charlynn squeezes some J/C love out of it, and Lorrie wants the Doctor to save the day. What would you do with “Workforce”? |
Wed, 30 October 2013
Samantha and Naomi Wildman. In this episode of To The Journey we continue our character analysis series with our favorite Katarian and her mom. Even though Naomi only had nineteen appearances, she made quite an impact on Voyager. She most definitely won the award for Least Annoying Kid on Star Trek. Tristan enjoyed the many versions of Naomi, Char cringed at her long gestation and horrifying birth, and Lorrie thought the writers just forgot about impregnating Samantha altogether. How do you feel about the pint-sized Captain’s assistant? |
Wed, 23 October 2013
Five-Episode Marathon. What Voyager episodes would you watch if you had five hours to spare? In this episode of To The Journey we talk about our sentimental favorites and those episodes we just keep coming back to over and over again. Tristan remembers his dad’s feelings about Voyager, Charlynn gets her J/C moments, and Lorrie relives her first Voyager experience. What’s your ideal marathon? |
Wed, 16 October 2013
Species 8472. The baddies of fluidic space, Species 8472 get their share of talk time in this episode of To The Journey. We love the thrill of any alien who can beat the Borg, and these CGI dudes sure could. In the three (or four) episodes they had a part in, they really shone as unstoppable villains. Char loves that they almost convince Chakotay to settle on Random M-Class Planet with his gal Kathryn, Lorrie loves that Harry got to wear ramen noodles out of his nose because of them, and Tristan would’ve loved to have seen them in an afro. |
Wed, 9 October 2013
The Doctor. Some characters stand out more than others in the Trek universe; and Voyager’s Doctor is one of them. In this episode of To The Journey we discuss the reasons why he is so memorable, from his extensive development throughout Voyager's seven-year journey to Robert Picardo's distinctive performance. We also discuss the list of names Doc tried but ultimately dumped. Char’s favorite is Schweitzer, while Tristan thinks he should have chosen Batman. Which name would you have chosen for The Doctor? |
Wed, 25 September 2013
Voyager’s Funniest Moments. Voyager arguably has some of the funniest, most memorable moments in all of Star Trek. In this episode of To The Journey we talk about our faves—including Jeri Ryan’s amazing comedic talents. We learn that Tristan thinks she almost out-doctors the Doctor in "Body and Soul" and Lorrie thinks she could probably recite the Rules of Acquisition from her performance in "Infinite Regress." But Char stuck with Janeway and her understanding of the caffeine orgasm in "Bride of Chaotica!" What are your funniest moments? |
Wed, 18 September 2013
Collective Commentary. Adolescent drones is what every starship needs running around, right? In this episode of To The Journey we take on the not-oft remembered episode which introduces us to the Borg kids—"Collective." It starts with the boys playing poker and ends with Seven in new clothes! Needless to say, our discussion takes us to places you'd expect, and a few you wouldn't. We find out that Char thinks the First Contact uniforms look sleek, Lorrie doesn't remember the Borg cubes, and that Tristan is thankful for Icheb. What did you think of those Borg babies? |
Wed, 11 September 2013
The Malon. Our in-depth study of Voyager aliens continues in this episode of To The Journey as we turn our attention to the Malon. That may sound very serious, but in reality we talk about those leaky, bumpy guys and all the havoc they wreak in the Delta Quadrant. Char likes their no-nonsense handling of everyone they meet, Lorrie enjoys the reflection of our own society seen in them, and Tristan loves their neat, junky ship. How do you feel about the Malon? |
Wed, 4 September 2013
The Fight Rewrite. Sometimes after watching an episode, don't you just shake your head and think "I could've done better than that!"? So it is with “The Fight.” In this episode of To The Journey we all try our hands at either throwing out the whole thing and starting over, or keeping the least painful parts and turning it into hopefully something better. Char has Chakotay feel the love, Tristan has the man face his defective gene head-on, and Lorrie just throws in an homage to "Rocky." What would you have done with "The Fight"? |
Wed, 28 August 2013
Kes. Our next character analysis takes us to the lovely underground home of the Ocampa and its gift to Voyager, Kes. In this episode of To The Journey as we explore the pixie’s life from her introduction in “Caretaker” to her departure in “The Gift.” All of us agree we love her spirit and taste for exploration, and that the writers of Voyager should have used her more often. Char loves her dishing out the snark to the Doctor, Tristan loves her backwards kangaroo maternity clothes, and Lorrie thinks her telekinetic powers should have been used to do cooler things that just melting Tuvok’s face. What did you like about Kes? |
Wed, 21 August 2013
Star Trek Las Vegas Recap. Sometimes it's okay to spill the beans on what happened in Vegas, and that's just what we do in this episode of To The Journey as Char and Lorrie answer all of Tristan’s questions about their whirlwind adventure in Sin City. We discuss all the Twitter meetups, the celebrity panels, and personal meetings with Trek royalty. STLV was a one-of-a-kind experience and the two ladies share their good times with you. |
Wed, 7 August 2013
Life On Voyager. In this episode of To The Journey we get personal and share what we would have liked to have done if we were living on the ship. We choose a character, a position, and an era in Voyager’s journey. The answers really show our diverse personalities. Lorrie wants to be reincarnated as a purple alien, Char wants to return to her adolescence, and Tristan… well he wants to perform the Riker Maneuver. What would you do as a crewman/officer on Voyager? |
Wed, 31 July 2013
The Hirogen. Our “Aliens of the DQ” series continues on this episode of To The Journey with a look at the venerable and gigantic (albeit shrinking) Hirogen. The fine species that brought us “The Killing Game”—the holographic equivalent of Nazi-occupied France—gave our valiant crew a good fight during their arc. Char visualized them eating gagh, Tristan imagined them leaving their tiny wives at home with the kids, and Lorrie saw them in a hunting club in South Georgia. What was your impression of the Hirogen? |
Wed, 24 July 2013
Tough Love. Everyone’s getting a good lesson in this week’s episode of To The Journey. We talk about those times when our characters needed a good smack or just a stern talking-to. Char goes for the overdramatic pip removal, Tristan loves a strong left hook, and Lorrie likes when Janeway just takes no excuses. What are your favorite tough love moments? |
Wed, 17 July 2013
Neelix. What’s the Delta Quadrant’s answer to Siri and Google Maps? Why Neelix, of course! The king of the leola root is not many a Star Trek fan’s favorite, but we all agree he was a necessity to the Voyager crew. In this episode of To The Journey we take a close look at Janeway’s Sacajawea. Lorrie likes his “ask forgiveness, not permission” attitude, Char liked him when he wore spaghetti, and Tristan just generally likes him. How do you feel about the “bar rodent”? |
Wed, 10 July 2013
Fury Rewrite. Kes was a sweet, kindhearted, loving little sprite when she left Voyager—and then came the episode “Fury.” We couldn’t let our girl go out like that, so this week we each salvage or totally rewrite the agony we saw onscreen. Char decides Kes needs to go all Al Gore in Ocampa, Tristan hooks her up with “man unknown,” and Lorrie uses the “Bob Newhart” approach. What would you have done with the hot mess that was “Fury”? |
Wed, 26 June 2013
The Vidiians. From the moment we saw them in “The Phage” to the mention of their cure in “Think Tank,” the Vidiians were an enemy to our intrepid crew. In this episode of To The Journey we tackle one of Voyager’s most horrifying villains, including what made them such a terrifying threat, our impressions of them as a race, and our respect for their survival techniques. Char makes us never look at Klingon B’Elanna the same way again, Tristan once again impresses us with his impressions—this time as Roxann Dawson with plastic teeth—and Lorrie might never use a quilt again without looking closely at the pattern. |
Wed, 19 June 2013
Blood Fever Commentary. It’s time to roll around in the dirt in this episode of To The Journey as we watch and discuss Voyager’s legendary Pon farr episode. Vorik chooses B’Elanna as his mate, and she punishes him for it. Tommy Boy shows his creamy center as he acts like a gentleman towards the woman of his dreams. Tristan does commentary in the style of Arnold Schwarzenegger… doing commentary. Char imitates… someone. And Lorrie likes the shiny-shine costumes. Get your DVD or Netflix ready, and watch along! |
Wed, 12 June 2013
Seven of Nine. Voyager’s resident Borg is next up on our continuing character analysis. Her introduction radically changed the landscape of the show, bringing the character into the spotlight time and time again. We discover that Char wanted Seven to go grunge, Lorrie enjoyed her “Borgness,” and Tristan still harbors a secret cardboard standup of her in a closet in his parent’s home. Were you able to resist or was it just futile? |
Wed, 5 June 2013
Janeway’s Treatment of the Prime Directive. Throughout Voyager’s run, our intrepid captain often faced criticism for behavior which seemed to violate Starfleet General Order 1. In this week’s episode of To The Journey we discuss our varied opinions about Captain Janeway’s decisions. Was she an altruistic savior of the Delta Quadrant or a selfish, stubborn interloper?

Episodes for the Non-fan. As the hosts of a Voyager podcast, we all have friends who have never seen any Trek or Voyager at all. What fine episode offerings could entice them to become loyal fans? What we come up with runs the gamut from great SF stories to wonderful character moments. If you opened the yellow candy box of Voyager episodes for your non-Trek friends, what would you recommend?

Harry Kim. He’s Voyager’s forever green ensign, frequent victim of misfortune, and the topic for this episode of To The Journey. Charlynn, Tristan, and Lorrie delve into the man, the mystery, the enigma that is our Ops officer. From his constant brushes with death, to his ill-fated captaincy and his troubled romantic life, we talk about what we love and find endearing about this character. Do you think Harry deserved another pip on his collar?

The Kazon. The hairstyle-challenged thieves of the Delta Quadrant are on deck for this episode of To The Journey. Were these former slaves of the Trabe really the villains the Voyager producers meant them to be, or were they just misunderstood? Charlynn, Tristan, and Lorrie discuss the culture, failings, and what-ifs of the Kazon. Were they worthy of their LA street gang origins, or were they just salon accidents?

Those Bad Guys. They’re the characters we can’t live with, and can’t live without. In this episode of To The Journey Tristan, Charlynn, and Lorrie have a three-round discussion of the characters we love to hate. Our list takes us from “Caretaker” all the way to “Endgame” with plenty of stops in between. We learn that Lorrie finds “Unforgettable“‘s Kellin quite forgettable, Char wishes Seska would’ve chosen better frenemies, and Tristan finds Red, I mean Annorax, a compelling creep. Who did you love to hate?

What if Voyager never got home? At some point, every Voyager fan has wondered what would have happened if the crew hadn’t gotten home in “Endgame.” In this episode of To The Journey Tristan and Char discuss what might have been had the final installment of the series played out differently—whether that meant returning to Earth several decades later, settling on a planet in the Delta Quadrant, or going out in a blaze of glory. One thing’s for sure in all of these scenarios: In Tristan’s universe, Icheb is dead.

Strong Character Episodes. Voyager often gets pooh-poohed for poor character development. This week we prove that completely wrong. In this episode of To The Journey, Tristan, Charlynn, and Lorrie discuss episodes that showcase the development of various characters on Voyager. Each choice reflects a facet of the characters, from “Faces” to “One.” We learn that Char loves sad clown Neelix, Lorrie extols Harry’s Jean Valjean martyr side, and Tristan, well he just gives Tuvok some love.

Thomas Eugene Paris. It’s never easy being the son of an Admiral. Expectations run high and the pressure can get to even the best of us. In this episode of To The Journey, Char, Tristan, and Lorrie talk about Tommy-boy and the character arc that made him wonderful to watch. From playboy to daddy, the growth of his character made him one of the most realistic crew members on Voyager.

Shattered Commentary. With Tristan in Sickbay, Char and Lorrie talk about the Voyager “clip episode” that wasn’t: “Shattered.” We look at the missed opportunities in a seven-year retrospective—such as Seska’s possible romantic re-entanglement with Chakotay or Chakotay’s choice to not violate the Temporal Prime Directive and tell Kathryn about the ship’s future.

Photonic Lifeforms. TNG had Moriarty. DS9 had Vic Fontaine. But Voyager... had the motherload. From the EMH to Michael Sullivan, were these characters real or were they just lights and computer programs? In this episode of To The Journey, Lorrie, Charlynn, and Tristan go in deep to tackle the topic of photonic life; but instead of answering the question they may just create a few more.

Voyager’s Best-known Guest Stars. You see them on the screen and know who they are; but not because you’ve watched every episode of Voyager a million times. In this episode of To The Journey, Lorrie, Charlynn, and Tristan discuss guest stars on Voyager whom we know from other TV programs, such as Sarah Silverman, Jason Alexander, The Rock, and more.

The Voyager Movie. The Original Series had its movies, and TNG was followed by some great features of its own. Loyal fans of Voyager demand equal treatment! We don’t require much—maybe a movie that deals with snippets from each of the post-Voyager novels and rewrites “Endgame”? Perhaps a sci-fi thriller pitting the Voyager crew against an unstoppable villan? Or simply a trip back to the Mirror Universe of “Living Witness” bringing the evil Voyager head-to-head with Prime Uni Voyager? In this episode of To The Journey, Charlynn, Lorrie, and Tristan share their ideas for the perfect Voyager movie. What are yours?
NOTE: This episode contains MASSIVE SPOILERS for the Voyager relaunch novel series. |

B’Elanna Torres. This week we show our love for B’Elanna Torres in our in-depth character analysis. From Maquis rebel to Starfleet darling, B’Elanna was a rich and well-developed part of the Voyager crew. We all agreed that she was one of our favorites. So, Qa’Pla and listen to us sing her praises. |
Wed, 27 February 2013
Badass Janeway. Sisko was a yeller, Picard gave flowery speeches, and Kirk was uber dramatic. And Janeway, our intrepid leader? She ran the gamut from almost inappropriate banter to just plain “dress-you-down” guilt. In this episode of To The Journey, Tristan, Charlynn, and Lorrie discuss the one-liners and eloquence that make Janeway so memorable. We know you have your favorites, so give ours a listen. In her own words, “Do it!”. |
Wed, 20 February 2013
Kes vs Seven. Kes, the sweet little innocent pixie, and Seven of Nine, the Borg who took her place. In this episode of To The Journey, Tristan, Charlynn, and Lorrie talk about the feels they had when Kes left and the “development” that occurred when Seven was added to the Voyager cast. Should Kes have stayed? Well, we know that Tristan’s cardboard cut-outs of Kes and Seven got along, so perhaps it would have worked. But, only if cut-out B’Elanna was there to break up the fight. |
Wed, 13 February 2013
Romance on the Love Boat in Space. Valentine’s Day is in the air, and everyone’s fancy turns to love. Or, at least, to “like.” In our romance-filled episode, we discuss the pairings we adored, the couples that Cupid should’ve ignored, and the alien-crew twosomes we wanted to see continue. Char spills her adulation for Jaffen, Lorrie purrs for Kashyk, and Tristan again stuns us with his fervent allegiance to Michael Sullivan. Happy Valentine’s Day! |
Wed, 6 February 2013
Episodes we for some reason love. We all enjoy things that are bad for us. Things like cheeseburgers, soda, and Lady Gaga. Every single Star Trek series has it’s bad episodes—and Voyager is no exception. Charlynn and Tristan discuss the episodes that they love but can’t defend. These episodes get the hatred and eye rolls they deserve but that will never stop the To the Journey crew from loving them to death. Listen in as Char and Tristan list their top three guilty pleasure episodes. |
Wed, 30 January 2013
Q2. Sometimes an episode just doesn’t live up to its potential. In this week’s episode of To The Journey, Lorrie, Charlynn, and Tristan take a look at the episode “Q2” and delve into its good and bad points. We also discuss what we would do if the show had been ours to create: Q Sr. has a midlife crisis, Q Jr. confronts his role as the savior of the Continuum, and Junior takes Aunt Kathy on her own Tapestry ride when we let our imaginations run wild. In related news, Tristan confesses that in his next life he wants to write fan fiction. |
Wed, 23 January 2013
Tuvok. Moving down the line we tackle another in-depth character analysis, setting our sights this time on Tuvok. In this week’s episode of To The Journey, Lorrie, Charlynn, and Tristan discuss Voyager’s resident Vulcan and discover that, although he was not true to character to begin with, he quickly grew into an integral part of the crew. Tuvok became a Maquis spy, a mentor, a moral compass, and a mutiny writer. And as we find out, Tristan likes him equally as well as he likes B’Elanna… although that remains to be seen. |
Wed, 16 January 2013
Non-renewable Resources. One of the many issues facing Voyager was the replacement of needed items without the luxury of going to a Starbase. In this week’s episode of To The Journey, Charlynn, Tristan, and Lorrie discuss replicator rations, leola root, and the on-again off-again difficulty of finding deuterium. Neelix’s new job as laundress is revealed, as well as Tristan’s need to see corn growing in the aeroponics bay. |
Wed, 9 January 2013
Threshold. Like a Janeway hairstyle change or a Harry Kim near-death experience, some things are inevitable. So it is with Voyager discussion and Brannon Braga’s hot mess called “Threshold.” Yes, we had to tackle the episode everyone loves to hate sooner or later—and there’s no time like the present. In this episode of To The Journey hosts Tristan Riddell, Charlynn Schmiedt, and Lorrie Sears mix together Robert Duncan McNeill’s performance, great character moments by the doctor, and the genius that is Neelix. With all these ingredients, who needs lizard babies? |
Wed, 2 January 2013
Tinker, Tenor, Doctor, Spy Commentary. 2013 is a new year, so Tristan, Charlynn, and Lorrie kick it off with something new: an episode commentary of “Tinker, Tenor, Doctor, Spy”. Follow along on Netflix or with your DVD as we discuss the ins and outs of the Doctor’s daydreaming experiment. |
