"Mortal Coil" Commentary.

It's Prixmas time once again at Trek.fm! While a (mostly) dead Neelix may not be the most festive of holiday podcast topics, "Mortal Coil" is where we first learn of the Talaxian holiday Prixin. In this episode of To The Journey, hosts Suzanne Williamson and Zachary Fruhling raise their glasses (or can, in the case of Suzanne) for a holiday salutation to ancestors and friends alike with an audio commentary on the fourth-season Voyager episode "Mortal Coil."

Tom Paris Mini-Marathon.

Of all the characters on Star Trek: Voyager, arguably Tom Paris had the biggest turnaround, from his character's beginning in a Federation penal colony in "Caretaker" to seeing the birth of his daughter in "Endgame." In this episode of To The Journey, hosts Zachary Fruhling and Suzanne Williamson compare their episodes picks for a three-episode Tom Paris mini-marathon.

Faces.

Like many of us (except for Suzanne!), B'Elanna Torres struggles with an inner dual nature. In B'Elanna's case, the struggle consists of finding the balance between her Klingon side and her human side. When B'Elanna's two halves are split into two distinct people, one fully Klingon and the other fully human, this inner struggle is acted out dramatically on screen between the two B'Elannas.

In this episode of To The Journey, hosts Suzanne Williamson and Zachary Fruhling discuss the many faces of "Faces," from B'Elanna's dual nature and Chakotay's inner Vidiian to Sulan's inner Hannibal Lecter.

Things We Love and Hate about Neelix.

Like many fans of Star Trek: Voyager, we have a love/hate relationship with the character of Neelix. His use as comic relief in the early seasons of Voyager is simultaneously both brilliant and groan-worthy, and it helped to establish the overall tone of Voyager as a fairly lighthearted installment of the overall Star Trek franchise. But while Neelix developed into a character with remarkable depth and subtlety, he is also not without his character flaws and faults. In this episode of To The Journey, hosts Zachary Fruhling and Suzanne Williamson discuss the things they love and hate about the character of Neelix.

Innocence.

Tuvok may be known for his Vulcan stoicism, but his Vulcan parenting skills are second to none. When Tuvok's shuttle crashes on one of the moons of Drayan Two, he's forced to care for three children who, unbeknownst to him, are actually elderly Drayans aging in reverse.

In this episode of To The Journey, hosts Suzanne Williamson and Zachary Fruhling discuss the second-season Voyager episode "Innocence," in which we see a kinder, gentler Tuvok keeping the monsters away and singing the children to sleep with a Vulcan lullaby. Suzanne and Zachary also discuss reverse-aging as a metaphor for senility in old age and the fear of death, along with Chakotay's diplomacy learning curve.

Star Trek: Voyager had no shortage of one-off characters that made a lasting impression on us, so much so that we wish that they had joined the Voyager crew, or at least that they would have become recurring characters. Nothing Human.

The real Crell Moset may have been a 24th-century Cardassian Dr. Mengele, but his holographic representation was always such a nice guy in the fifth-season Voyagerepisode "Nothing Human." In this episode of To The Journey, hosts Suzanne Williamson and Zachary Fruhling discuss the pros and cons of using Crell Moset's morally questionable medical research, and the possibly tainted medical knowledge it produced, to save the life of B'Elanna Torres against her own wishes.

"False Profits" Commentary.

Ferengi in the Delta Quadrant? We thought we'd seen the last of the scheming Ferengi pair Arridor and Kol when they were stranded on the other side of the unstable Barzan Wormhole in the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode "The Price." Little did we know at the time that we would get a sequel to "The Price" in the form of the third-season Voyagerepisode, "False Profits." Unsurprisingly, with the help of a salvaged replicator, Arridor and Kol have co-opted the local mythology and cornered the market on lobe-shaped costume jewelry on a pre-warp planet in the Delta Quadrant.

In this episode of To The Journey, hosts Zachary Fruhling and Suzanne Williamson bend the Prime Directive in an audio commentary on "False Profits."

Top Harry Kim Moments.

When stranded in the Delta Quadrant it's important to have a spirit of youthful optimism. In Star Trek: Voyager, this youthful optimism is provided by none other than Ensign Harry Kim. Brimming with excitement for his first deep space assignment, Ensign Kim is practically the poster figure for the ideal Starfleet officer. But along Voyager's sever-year journey home, we see Ensign Kim learn to stand up for himself and even break a rule or two from time to time. And while Ensign Kim doesn't often get to be in the limelight, he does get to take the center seat (well, on the night shift at least, twice a week). In this episode of To The Journey, hosts Suzanne Williamson and Zachary Fruhling compare their picks for the top Harry Kim moments in Star Trek: Voyager.

"Muse" Commentary.

The Voyager story has always been epic in scope, with its 70-year journey home being reminiscent of Odysseus's ten-year voyage home to Ithaca after the fall of Troy in the ancient Greek epic poem, The Odyssey. With this epic scope of the Voyager story, it's no accident that Kelis, a poet and playwright from an alien society reminiscent of ancient Greece, finds creative inspiration in the mission logs from the wreckage of the Delta Flyerin the sixth-season Voyager episode "Muse."

In this episode of To The Journey, hosts Suzanne Williamson and Zachary Fruhling give an audio commentary on "Muse" and explore whether the Voyager story, or perhaps Star Trekin general, really has the power to end wars and create peace through drama as inspiration and cathartic release.

Doomed Voyager Relationships - Part 1.

The relationship between B'Elanna Torres and Tom Paris is perhaps the only successful long-term relationship in all of Star Trek: Voyager. Far more numerous are the many failed relationship attempts, sometimes between members of the Voyager crew themselves, but more often between a member of the Voyager crew and a member of an alien species or (surprisingly often) a hologram.

In this episode of To The Journey, hosts Suzanne Williamson and Zachary Fruhling have part one of their two-part discussion on doomed relationships in Star Trek: Voyager. From Harry Kim's notorious string of bad luck (sometimes while forgetting to file the proper paperwork!) to The Doctor's doomed relationship prospects, both organic and holographic, find out whether Suzanne and Zachary retain their shipper optimism in their exploration of doomed Voyager relationships.

Tuvix Alternatives.

The second-season Voyager episode "Tuvix" featured some amazing acting on the part of actor Tom Wright as Tuvix, a transporter-created hybrid of Tuvok and Neelix, capturing the distinctive personality traits and mannerisms of both characters. In this episode of To The Journey, hosts Suzanne Williamson and Zachary Fruhling imagine alternative Voyagercharacter hybrids besides Tuvok and Neelix. Which character traits would be most prominent, and which actors or actresses would best capture the personality traits and mannerisms of these alternative character hybrids?

Halfway Home.

The seventh-season episode "Shattered" offers a tiny glimpse into one possible future for the Voyager crew, 17 years into the future. If the events of the Voyager series finale "Endgame" had not occurred, presumably Voyager would have continued its long trek back to the Alpha Quadrant over a period of 75 years. In that time, there would naturally be changes aboard Voyager as crew members age, retire, or pass away, and with younger officers rising through the ranks to take their place.

In this episode of To The Journey, hosts Zachary Fruhling and Suzanne Williamson discuss other possible futures for Voyager, 30 years into the journey and halfway home. Who would the captain of Voyager be after 30 years? What would the command structure be like? Who would the senior officers and department heads be? How would the careers of junior officers and the children born aboard Voyager develop over 30 years? And would there be any major changes to Voyager itself or the premise of the series as a whole?

Seska...What If?

Seska may be the character fans love to hate in Star Trek: Voyager. And sadly, or perhaps gladly, Seska met her demise at the beginning of Season 3. But what would have happened had Seska remained on Voyager for all seven seasons? How might the Voyagerstory have unfolded differently had Seska not in fact been a Cardassian spy, but instead an ordinary, run-of-the-mill (but still feisty) Bajoran?

In this episode of To The Journey, hosts Suzanne Williamson and Zachary Fruhling explore alternative directions that the character of Seska could have taken in Voyager. What if Seska and Chakotay had maintained a long-term relationship and raised a family together? What if Seska were actually a changeling instead of a Cardassian? What if, instead of the Delaney Sisters, Voyager had more than one twin or clone Seska Sisters? And how exactly is laundry done aboard Voyager, and what does that have to do with Seska?

Course: Oblivion.

Things are looking up for the Voyager crew at the beginning of the fifth-season episode "Course: Oblivion," from the wedding of Tom Paris and B'Elanna Torres to an enhanced warp drive. But that all changes when the ship and crew begin losing their molecular cohesion, only to discover that they are, in fact, merely biomimetic duplicates of the real Voyager ship and crew, created a year before when Voyager landed on the aptly named "Demon Planet."

In this episode of To The Journey, hosts Zachary Fruhling and Suzanne Williamson (or perhaps their biomimetic duplicates; you be the judge!) discuss the merits of "Course: Oblivion." From the minutiae of the wedding of Fake-Tom and Fake-B'Elanna to the existential burdens of being a biomimetic duplicate, Zachary and Suzanne wrestle with  whether "Course: Oblivion" is as riveting as they recall and whether "Course: Oblivion" is really just one big metaphor for our finite human lives.

Non-Doctor/Seven Episodes in Seasons Five through Seven.

Seasons five through seven of Star Trek: Voyager are known for their many memorable episodes featuring the great on-screen chemistry and friendship of Robert Picardo and Jeri Ryan as The Doctor and Seven of Nine, so much so that one might naturally think that seasons five through seven are really just the Doctor/Seven show! In this episode of To The Journey, however, hosts Suzanne Williamson, Kay Shaw, and Zachary Fruhling go in search of their favorite non-Doctor/Seven episodes from the last three seasons of Star Trek: Voyager.

We Need to Talk about Chakotay.

Unquestionably the character of Commander Chakotay was underutilized in Star Trek: Voyager. But beyond merely being underutilized, some Star Trek fans have developed a form of loathing for Commander Chakotay, partly because of his nonplussed demeanor and partly because of his amalgam of stereotypes about Native American beliefs and spirituality. In this episode of To The Journey, hosts Zachary Fruhling, Kay Shaw, and Suzanne Williamson come racing to Commander Chakotay's defense with a discussion of what they love about, and what was done right with Voyager's intrepid first officer.

"Year of Hell" Commentary.

The two-part episode "Year of Hell" is taken by many to be one of the highlights of season four of Star Trek: Voyager, if not of the entire Voyager series. From memorable moments with a certain replicated pocket watch to Annorax's Captain Ahab-like quest against time itself, "Year of Hell" shows the strength of the Voyager crew as a family, even in Voyager's darkest hours (the Voyager reset button aside). Switch on your temporal shielding and join hosts Kay Shaw, Zachary Fruhling, and Suzanne Williamson in this episode of To The Journey for an audio commentary on "Year of Hell," parts I and II.
