Season One Rewrite.

In this episode of To The Journey, hosts Zachary Fruhling, Liam Smart, and Suzanne Williamson rewrite season one of Star Trek: Voyager with a season-long story arc involving the Vidiians as the main adversary instead of the Kazon.

"Fair Haven" Rewrite.

Voyager fans tend to fall into one of two categories: those that love "Fair Haven" and those that loathe "Fair Haven." In this episode of To The Journey, hosts Zachary Fruhling, Kay Shaw, and Suzanne Williamson attempt to make "Fair Haven" a bit more palatable to the latter with a "Fair Haven" rewrite! Follow the crew of To The Journey in search of the pot of gold-pressed latinum at the end of the rainbow, omnipotent leprechauns, and Fair Haven limericks:

There once was hologram from Fair Haven
Who was stuck in a situation most graven.
He went on a quest
With a clover on his breast
And all the Irish lasses were wavin'.

There once was a Q from the continuum
Who was stuck in Fair Haven for a millennium.
He wore green shiny pants
And caused a romance
And their love was as strong as tritanium.

181: USS Germophobe

Rewrite of "The Disease."

Love hurts, and no one on Voyager knows that better than Harry Kim. He left behind his fiancee back on Earth and he's been down on his luck since, having unsuccessfully fallen for a hologram, an ex-Borg, and the wrong Delaney sister. When he falls madly in love Derran Tal in "The Disease," it's really not a surprise that something went wrong. Not only must Harry answer to an angry Mama Bear Janeway when she finds out Harry didn't file his "I wanna make love with an alien" paperwork, but he also gets a raging case of space herpes. Poor Harry doesn't ever catch a break.

In this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan take the elements of "The Disease" they did like and transform the rest into their own episode rewrites. Does Harry still glow when they're finished with him? Listen and find out.

177: Candy Corn

"Time and Again" rewrite.

The Voyager episode "Time and Again" does not stand out by any stretch of the imagination. In fact, it is forgettable — and you *can* forget about it because in the end, the events that occur in the story are reset by mucking about with time! In this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan give "Time and Again" some love and think of ways they could improve the story and make it more noteworthy.

Char and Tristan will be at Star Trek Las Vegas next week! Not only will they record an episode of TTJ in person for the first time, but they will also be contestants on the Super BridgeMates panel happening at 12:30 p.m. on August 5 on the Roddenberry stage. Please join us if you will be at the convention!

164: The Naked Dessert

Rewriting DS9's "Fascination" into Voyager.

Tristan and Char have been on a creative streak lately. Two episodes ago, they conducted a session in the writer's room and improvised an episode live during the recording. Then, they explored what Voyager might look like in the JJ-verse. For this episode, they are still feeling the creative vibes, so Char and Tristan are back in the writer's room for a rewrite of Deep Space Nine's "Fascination." In this Season Three episode, a Bajoran holiday ritual mixes with telepathy and the crew starts forming unlikely infatuations with one another. Since Voyager never got its version of this "Naked Now"/"Naked Time"-esque storytelling, Char and Tristan take the premise from "Fascination" and rework it into Voyager. Who pursues whom and do they make out? You will have to listen to the episode and find out.

To The Journey 157: Mãsh

Voyager Rewrite of TNG's "Captain's Holiday."

What do you do when your captain refuses to take a much-needed vacation? As a crew member, you conspire with your peers and *make* it happen. That's what the crew of the Enterprise-D did to Captain Picard, and in this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan do the same to Captain Janeway. With no prior preparation, Char and Tristan craft a rewrite of TNG's "Captain's Holiday" and give it a Voyager spin. Listen on and find out what sort of shenanigans ensue when Janeway meets her Vash.

To The Journey 153: Mosh Pit of Emotion

"Infinite Regress" Rewrite.

One of Char and Tristan's favorite things to do on To The Journey is rewrite an episode of Voyager that could have used some extra love. On the block this go around is "Infinite Regress", an episode that is dynamic but lacks the long-term impact of a synthetic pathogenic virus. Grab your Kadis-kot board, listen in and find out how Char and Tristan would give "Infinite Regress" a new personality (or multiple) in their rewrites of this episode from Voyager's fifth season.

To The Journey 144: Darmok 101

"Nemesis" Rewrite.

Chakotay-centric episodes are typically not highly-rated among the Star Trek fanbase. Most of them leave a lot to be desired, but "Nemesis" might be an exception. The episode explores what war does to the mind, and may have greater significance in our post-9/11 culture than it did when it first aired in 1997. In this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan take another look at what they thought was a mediocre episode. However, they realized they were both wrong but amped it up in their rewrites anyway. Listen on and find out how they would improve one of Season Four's most underrated and overlooked episodes.

To The Journey 130: Dust to Dust

"Ashes to Ashes" Rewrite.

Hey, do you remember that ensign who died three years ago? No? It's okay, neither do we. But guess what, she's back! And she looks nothing like her former self! What the heck is going on?

The above is the essential premise for "Ashes to Ashes," a Voyager Season Six story that had several interesting ideas behind it, but fell short of its potential. In this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan rewrite "Ashes to Ashes" and reveal how they would take this kernel of an idea and make it pop into something with more drama, emotion, and overall intrigue.

To The Journey 124: Coffee Ice Cream

"Extreme Risk" Rewrite.

When Char and Tristan choose an episode that deserves a rewrite, it's usually an episode with untapped potential. This time, things are different. In this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan rewrite "Extreme Risk" with one major change: Janeway takes B'Elanna's place as the character who's numbed from depression. Since Janeway was dealing with depression in "Night," Voyager's Season Five opener, it seemed natural fit to continue the storyline. "Extreme Risk" was an excellent episode as produced, so how much really changes when a different character has to deal with the same set of circumstances? Listen on and find out.

To The Journey 112: Do We Need the Kids?

"Collective" Rewrite.

Children on Star Trek has always been a mixed bag. The Borg kids, whom we first meet in Voyager's sixth season episode "Collective," are no different. In this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan attempt an assimilation of "Collective" in hopes of bringing it closer to perfection...or a rewrite, at least. They debate the usefulness of the Borg kids on Voyager, rave about how the episode excels visually, and discuss what changes they think would have made "Collective" an episode that even the Borg Queen would approve of.

To The Journey 106: Pyrokinesis

"Cold Fire" rewrite.

The time has come again when Char and Tristan pick an episode of Voyager and give it a little TLC. This time, it's Season Two's "Cold Fire," where Voyager encounters the Caretaker's mate, Susperia, and a group of Ocampans who have embraced and honed their telekinetic abilities. Let us not forget the bonus of Kes accidentally boiling Tuvok. Listen on and find out what Char and Tristan would have kept in, removed, and how they would have transformed "Cold Fire" into a less contrived story and a more compelling hour of television.

To The Journey 98: 99% Sexy Time

Remember Rewrite.

Episode quality varies greatly in Voyager's body of work, ranging from exceptional to downright pitiful. Most episodes fall somewhere in between these extremes, and they are the best candidates for a TTJ-style facelift.

In this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan share their ideas for how they would bring more life to Voyager's "Remember," a Season-Three story where the romance of Romeo and Juliet collides with the genocide that occurred during World War II. We also briefly discuss Born With Teeth, Kate Mulgrew's memoir, which will be published in April 2015. The audio clip inserted in this episode is from TotallyKate.com.

To The Journey 89: Amnesia Love Story

Unforgettable Rewrite.

Chakotay-centric episodes rarely make fans' lists of favorites. Whether it's the writing, story, or the performance, they just don't stand out. For Char and Tristan, the ill-designated "Unforgettable" from Season Four tends to be just the opposite of what the title implies. In this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan share their thoughts on how they would make "Unforgettable" a bit more indelible. Listen on and find out what they liked, what they didn't, and how they would bolster this episode so that it would live up to its title.

To The Journey 79: Neelix Lost his Shoes

Displaced Rewrite.

Not all Voyager episodes are winners. Some are downright ugly and others are forgettably mediocre. Season Three's "Displaced" fits the latter, and in this episode of To The Journey Charlynn and Tristan give this story a rewrite. Both agree that the episode needed better action sequences and more of them, but differ on who should save the ship. Did Char appreciate the rarely seen "Action Chakotay!" sequences and want more of them? Did Tristan find yet another way to bring the monkey from "Resolutions" into the mix? Listen on and find out what they would have done to improved "Displaced."

To The Journey 71: Have You Been Naughty?

Darkling Rewrite.

In this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan rewrite Voyager's "Darkling" from Season Three. They agree that letting The Doctor "try on" new personalities is fun and describe how they would more effectively let Robert Picardo chew the scenery. They also discuss how they would rshape Kes' romance into a deeper and more meaningful B-plot.

"Innocence" Rewrite.

Ever wonder what "could have been" with Season Two's "Innocence?" In this episode of To The Journey, Charlynn and Tristan delve deep into the episode's full potential as they rewrite and discuss kids who aren't really kids, mosquito nets as clothing, and what actually happened to Ensign Bennett.

To The Journey 56: Why We Have Fanfic

Resolutions Rewrite.

Thousands of Voyager fans have written Janeway/Chakotay fanfic to rework “Resolutions” to their liking. And in this episode of To The Journey, Tristan and Char join in. Tristan goes for the Harlequin romance angle, while Char doesn’t stop at just one episode and instead writes a three-part epic. Listen on and find out what exactly Tristan and Char had Janeway and Chakotay do in their idealized visions of “Resolutions.” And, of course, we speak at length about our favorite primate.

To The Journey 49: Bat’leth to the Face

Workforce Rewrite.

Don’t you hate it when Input Error 415 and Command Code Violation 2308 ruin your day at the office? So do we. And we’re going to do something about it. In this episode of To The Journey we rewrite of the lovely two-parter “Workforce.” We take the lukewarm show and try to inject some life into it. Tristan turns the work planet into a gulag, Charlynn squeezes some J/C love out of it, and Lorrie wants the Doctor to save the day. What would you do with “Workforce”?

To The Journey 41: Just His Gloves

The Fight Rewrite.

Sometimes after watching an episode, don't you just shake your head and think "I could've done better than that!"? So it is with “The Fight.” In this episode of To The Journey we all try our hands at either throwing out the whole thing and starting over, or keeping the least painful parts and turning it into hopefully something better. Char has Chakotay feel the love, Tristan has the man face his defective gene head-on, and Lorrie just throws in an homage to "Rocky." What would you have done with "The Fight"?

To The Journey 34: Space Alzheimer’s

Fury Rewrite.

Kes was a sweet, kindhearted, loving little sprite when she left Voyager—and then came the episode “Fury.” We couldn’t let our girl go out like that, so this week we each salvage or totally rewrite the agony we saw onscreen. Char decides Kes needs to go all Al Gore in Ocampa, Tristan hooks her up with “man unknown,” and Lorrie uses the “Bob Newhart” approach. What would you have done with the hot mess that was “Fury”?
