After 282 episodes, To The Journey is set for another transition as the current hosts disembark.

In this special episode of To The Journey, hosts Liam Smart and Suzanne Williamson aimlessly talk about things to do with Star Trek Voyager. We talk about Voyager toys, hot aliens, and a bit of fanfic.

With over 160 episodes of Star Trek: Voyager, you could be forgiven for thinking a few can go on the ‘meh’ pile. There are also a lot of episodes that rise to the top when it comes to thinking of the best of the best. But it is almost impossible to choose just one episode from each series that is not to be missed.

In this episode of To The Journey, hosts Liam Smart and Suzanne Williamson attempt to whittle down each season to just ONE episode that embodies Voyager. Of course they do not agree...

One of the many, many (did we say many?) episodes of Star Trek: Voyager to feature the Borg, Season 6’s Survival Instinct focuses on members of Seven of Nine’s Unimatrix that crash landed with her on a random planet a few years prior to the events of the episode. These now ex-Borg are desperate to find a way of delinking themselves from the mini-collective they were forced to form by Seven, and now require Seven to help them undo it.

In this episode of To The Journey, hosts Suzanne Williamson and Liam Smart are joined by Christopher D Littlefield for a commentary on Season 6 Episode 2, Survival Instinct.

Farewells in Voyager and Farewell to Zachary.

Star Trek: Voyager had its fair share of farewells, from the departure of Kes and Neelix to some emotional farewells between the Voyager crew and their alien love interests of the week. In this episode of To The Journey, we discuss the many farewells in Voyager—even one goodbye that's more of a "good riddance" than a farewell! And, in this special episode of To The Journey, hosts Suzanne Williamson and Liam Smart say their farewells to fellow host Zachary Fruhling, departing the show for the next leg of the journey, in podcasting and in life.

Fans of Star Trek: Voyager were excited to see the return of Seven of Nine to the Star Trek universe in the first season of Star Trek: Picard. From Borg drone to member of the Voyager crew to Fenris Ranger, hosts Zachary Fruhling, Suzanne Williamson, and Liam Smart discuss Seven of Nine's overall character arc and the differences between her appearances in Star Trek: Voyager and the first season of Star Trek: Picard.

11:59.

It is rare that we see an actor take time out of their contracted role to play another character in the same show. Kate Mulgrew does just that in 11:59 where she plays Shannon O'Donnell, an ancestor of Kathryn Janeway in the year 2000. 11:59 is an episode that does not stick in one's mind as a memorable; however, it does bring to light some interesting questions on ancestry, the accuracy of history, and your own legacy.

In this episode of To The Journey, hosts, Liam Smart, and Zachary Fruhling, discuss what they think of 11:59, their own ancestry, history, new year resolutions, and with the turn of the new decade: what the last decade's legacy has been.

It's Prixmas time once again at Trek.fm! While a (mostly) dead Neelix may not be the most festive of holiday podcast topics, "Mortal Coil" is where we first learn of the Talaxian holiday Prixin. In this episode of To The Journey, hosts Suzanne Williamson and Zachary Fruhling raise their glasses (or can, in the case of Suzanne) for a holiday salutation to ancestors and friends alike with an audio commentary on the fourth-season Voyager episode "Mortal Coil."

Tom Paris Mini-Marathon.

Of all the characters on Star Trek: Voyager, arguably Tom Paris had the biggest turnaround, from his character's beginning in a Federation penal colony in "Caretaker" to seeing the birth of his daughter in "Endgame." In this episode of To The Journey, hosts Zachary Fruhling and Suzanne Williamson compare their episodes picks for a three-episode Tom Paris mini-marathon.

Faces.

Like many of us (except for Suzanne!), B'Elanna Torres struggles with an inner dual nature. In B'Elanna's case, the struggle consists of finding the balance between her Klingon side and her human side. When B'Elanna's two halves are split into two distinct people, one fully Klingon and the other fully human, this inner struggle is acted out dramatically on screen between the two B'Elannas.

In this episode of To The Journey, hosts Suzanne Williamson and Zachary Fruhling discuss the many faces of "Faces," from B'Elanna's dual nature and Chakotay's inner Vidiian to Sulan's inner Hannibal Lecter.

Things We Love and Hate about Neelix.

Like many fans of Star Trek: Voyager, we have a love/hate relationship with the character of Neelix. His use as comic relief in the early seasons of Voyager is simultaneously both brilliant and groan-worthy, and it helped to establish the overall tone of Voyager as a fairly lighthearted installment of the overall Star Trek franchise. But while Neelix developed into a character with remarkable depth and subtlety, he is also not without his character flaws and faults. In this episode of To The Journey, hosts Zachary Fruhling and Suzanne Williamson discuss the things they love and hate about the character of Neelix.

Innocence.

Tuvok may be known for his Vulcan stoicism, but his Vulcan parenting skills are second to none. When Tuvok's shuttle crashes on one of the moons of Drayan Two, he's forced to care for three children who, unbeknownst to him, are actually elderly Drayans aging in reverse.

In this episode of To The Journey, hosts Suzanne Williamson and Zachary Fruhling discuss the second-season Voyager episode "Innocence," in which we see a kinder, gentler Tuvok keeping the monsters away and singing the children to sleep with a Vulcan lullaby. Suzanne and Zachary also discuss reverse-aging as a metaphor for senility in old age and the fear of death, along with Chakotay's diplomacy learning curve.

Star Trek: Voyager had no shortage of one-off characters that made a lasting impression on us, so much so that we wish that they had joined the Voyager crew, or at least that they would have become recurring characters. Nothing Human.

The real Crell Moset may have been a 24th-century Cardassian Dr. Mengele, but his holographic representation was always such a nice guy in the fifth-season Voyagerepisode "Nothing Human." In this episode of To The Journey, hosts Suzanne Williamson and Zachary Fruhling discuss the pros and cons of using Crell Moset's morally questionable medical research, and the possibly tainted medical knowledge it produced, to save the life of B'Elanna Torres against her own wishes.

"False Profits" Commentary.

Ferengi in the Delta Quadrant? We thought we'd seen the last of the scheming Ferengi pair Arridor and Kol when they were stranded on the other side of the unstable Barzan Wormhole in the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode "The Price." Little did we know at the time that we would get a sequel to "The Price" in the form of the third-season Voyagerepisode, "False Profits." Unsurprisingly, with the help of a salvaged replicator, Arridor and Kol have co-opted the local mythology and cornered the market on lobe-shaped costume jewelry on a pre-warp planet in the Delta Quadrant.

In this episode of To The Journey, hosts Zachary Fruhling and Suzanne Williamson bend the Prime Directive in an audio commentary on "False Profits."

Top Harry Kim Moments.

When stranded in the Delta Quadrant it's important to have a spirit of youthful optimism. In Star Trek: Voyager, this youthful optimism is provided by none other than Ensign Harry Kim. Brimming with excitement for his first deep space assignment, Ensign Kim is practically the poster figure for the ideal Starfleet officer. But along Voyager's sever-year journey home, we see Ensign Kim learn to stand up for himself and even break a rule or two from time to time. And while Ensign Kim doesn't often get to be in the limelight, he does get to take the center seat (well, on the night shift at least, twice a week). In this episode of To The Journey, hosts Suzanne Williamson and Zachary Fruhling compare their picks for the top Harry Kim moments in Star Trek: Voyager.

"Muse" Commentary.

The Voyager story has always been epic in scope, with its 70-year journey home being reminiscent of Odysseus's ten-year voyage home to Ithaca after the fall of Troy in the ancient Greek epic poem, The Odyssey. With this epic scope of the Voyager story, it's no accident that Kelis, a poet and playwright from an alien society reminiscent of ancient Greece, finds creative inspiration in the mission logs from the wreckage of the Delta Flyerin the sixth-season Voyager episode "Muse."

In this episode of To The Journey, hosts Suzanne Williamson and Zachary Fruhling give an audio commentary on "Muse" and explore whether the Voyager story, or perhaps Star Trekin general, really has the power to end wars and create peace through drama as inspiration and cathartic release.

Doomed Voyager Relationships - Part 1.

The relationship between B'Elanna Torres and Tom Paris is perhaps the only successful long-term relationship in all of Star Trek: Voyager. Far more numerous are the many failed relationship attempts, sometimes between members of the Voyager crew themselves, but more often between a member of the Voyager crew and a member of an alien species or (surprisingly often) a hologram.

In this episode of To The Journey, hosts Suzanne Williamson and Zachary Fruhling have part one of their two-part discussion on doomed relationships in Star Trek: Voyager. From Harry Kim's notorious string of bad luck (sometimes while forgetting to file the proper paperwork!) to The Doctor's doomed relationship prospects, both organic and holographic, find out whether Suzanne and Zachary retain their shipper optimism in their exploration of doomed Voyager relationships.

Tuvix Alternatives.

The second-season Voyager episode "Tuvix" featured some amazing acting on the part of actor Tom Wright as Tuvix, a transporter-created hybrid of Tuvok and Neelix, capturing the distinctive personality traits and mannerisms of both characters. In this episode of To The Journey, hosts Suzanne Williamson and Zachary Fruhling imagine alternative Voyagercharacter hybrids besides Tuvok and Neelix. Which character traits would be most prominent, and which actors or actresses would best capture the personality traits and mannerisms of these alternative character hybrids?

Halfway Home.

The seventh-season episode "Shattered" offers a tiny glimpse into one possible future for the Voyager crew, 17 years into the future. If the events of the Voyager series finale "Endgame" had not occurred, presumably Voyager would have continued its long trek back to the Alpha Quadrant over a period of 75 years. In that time, there would naturally be changes aboard Voyager as crew members age, retire, or pass away, and with younger officers rising through the ranks to take their place.

In this episode of To The Journey, hosts Zachary Fruhling and Suzanne Williamson discuss other possible futures for Voyager, 30 years into the journey and halfway home. Who would the captain of Voyager be after 30 years? What would the command structure be like? Who would the senior officers and department heads be? How would the careers of junior officers and the children born aboard Voyager develop over 30 years? And would there be any major changes to Voyager itself or the premise of the series as a whole?

Seska...What If?

Seska may be the character fans love to hate in Star Trek: Voyager. And sadly, or perhaps gladly, Seska met her demise at the beginning of Season 3. But what would have happened had Seska remained on Voyager for all seven seasons? How might the Voyagerstory have unfolded differently had Seska not in fact been a Cardassian spy, but instead an ordinary, run-of-the-mill (but still feisty) Bajoran?

In this episode of To The Journey, hosts Suzanne Williamson and Zachary Fruhling explore alternative directions that the character of Seska could have taken in Voyager. What if Seska and Chakotay had maintained a long-term relationship and raised a family together? What if Seska were actually a changeling instead of a Cardassian? What if, instead of the Delaney Sisters, Voyager had more than one twin or clone Seska Sisters? And how exactly is laundry done aboard Voyager, and what does that have to do with Seska?

Course: Oblivion.

Things are looking up for the Voyager crew at the beginning of the fifth-season episode "Course: Oblivion," from the wedding of Tom Paris and B'Elanna Torres to an enhanced warp drive. But that all changes when the ship and crew begin losing their molecular cohesion, only to discover that they are, in fact, merely biomimetic duplicates of the real Voyager ship and crew, created a year before when Voyager landed on the aptly named "Demon Planet."

In this episode of To The Journey, hosts Zachary Fruhling and Suzanne Williamson (or perhaps their biomimetic duplicates; you be the judge!) discuss the merits of "Course: Oblivion." From the minutiae of the wedding of Fake-Tom and Fake-B'Elanna to the existential burdens of being a biomimetic duplicate, Zachary and Suzanne wrestle with  whether "Course: Oblivion" is as riveting as they recall and whether "Course: Oblivion" is really just one big metaphor for our finite human lives.

Non-Doctor/Seven Episodes in Seasons Five through Seven.

Seasons five through seven of Star Trek: Voyager are known for their many memorable episodes featuring the great on-screen chemistry and friendship of Robert Picardo and Jeri Ryan as The Doctor and Seven of Nine, so much so that one might naturally think that seasons five through seven are really just the Doctor/Seven show! We Need to Talk about Chakotay.

Unquestionably the character of Commander Chakotay was underutilized in Star Trek: Voyager. But beyond merely being underutilized, some Star Trek fans have developed a form of loathing for Commander Chakotay, partly because of his nonplussed demeanor and partly because of his amalgam of stereotypes about Native American beliefs and spirituality. In this episode of To The Journey, hosts Zachary Fruhling, Kay Shaw, and Suzanne Williamson come racing to Commander Chakotay's defense with a discussion of what they love about, and what was done right with Voyager's intrepid first officer.

"Year of Hell" Commentary.

The two-part episode "Year of Hell" is taken by many to be one of the highlights of season four of Star Trek: Voyager, if not of the entire Voyager series. From memorable moments with a certain replicated pocket watch to Annorax's Captain Ahab-like quest against time itself, "Year of Hell" shows the strength of the Voyager crew as a family, even in Voyager's darkest hours (the Voyager reset button aside). Daddy Issues.

While the crew of Voyager rightly constitute their own adopted family aboard Voyager, an important aspect of many Voyager characters' backstories is their troubled, or at least challenged, relationship with their respective fathers and father figures. From Tom Paris's sense of inadequacy in living up to Admiral Paris's expectations to The Doctor's ongoing attempt to build a relationship with his father-figure and creator, Dr. Lewis Zimmerman, the crew of Voyager frequently explores the murky realm of parental and familial relations.

In this episode of To The Journey, hosts Kay Shaw, Suzanne Williamson, and Zachary Fruhling explore the complex and often troubled paternal relationships of the Voyagercrew, building new bridges and tearing down old walls along the journey!

Defending "Threshold."

The second-season episode "Threshold" is generally acknowledged to be one of the weakest episodes of Star Trek: Voyager. But in this episode of To The Journey, hosts Suzanne Williamson, Kay Shaw, and Zachary Fruhling respond to a recent challenge to give their best defense, an apologia in the classical Greek sense, of "Threshold," discussing only its merits and leaving any criticism of "Threshold" in their quarters.

From the physics of traveling at Warp 10 and occupying every point in the universe simultaneously to the importance of "Threshold" for the character development of Tom Paris and his (um, professional) relationship with Captain Janeway, find out whether "Threshold" can be salvaged from the ash heap of Delta Quadrant history and reestablished as part of the pantheon of important and valuable episodes of Star Trek: Voyager.

What do you get when you cross a few Borg nanoprobes, a piece of 29th-century holographic technology, and the DNA of a Starfleet ensign? One extremely souped-up 29th-century Borg drone! But this drone also comes with a human heart, willing to sacrifice himself for the well-being of his Voyager collective.

Tom Paris and B'Elanna Torres Relationship Analysis.

We see precious few genuine romantic relationships onscreen in Star Trek, and arguably the relationship between Tom Paris and B'Elanna Torres is the most fully developed relationship in all of Star Trek. Over the seven-year run of Star Trek: Voyager, we see the full progression of Tom and B'Elanna's romantic relationship, from their initial status as slightly antagonistic colleagues, to their developing friendship and courtship, to their eventual marriage and the birth of their daughter, Miral.

In this episode of To The Journey, hosts Kay Shaw, Suzanne Williamson, and Zachary Fruhling take an in-depth look at the high points, and the low points, of Voyager's resident opposites-attract couple, Tom Paris and B'Elanna Torres.

Counselor Troi in Voyager.

Some fans of Star Trek: The Next Generation who didn't follow Voyager's seven-year trek home from the Delta Quadrant may not realize that Marina Sirtis reprised her role as Counselor Deanna Troi in three different episode of Star Trek: Voyager. Some people even (audaciously) maintain that Counselor Troi was a more sophisticated and effective counselor in Voyager as she counseled her colleague and friend, Lieutenant Reginald Barclay, than she was in Star Trek: The Next Generation.

In this episode of To The Journey, hosts Suzanne Williamson, Kay Shaw, and Zachary Fruhling are joined by Amy Nelson, co-host of Trek.fm's dedicated Next Generationpodcast Earl Grey, for a discussion of Marina Sirtis's three appearances as Counselor Deanna Troi in Star Trek: Voyager.

Vorik Character Analysis.

Tuvok wasn't the only Vulcan aboard Voyager. In contrast to Tuvok's elder-statesman Vulcan persona was the more youthful and more enthusiastic Ensign Vorik. Being a youthful Vulcan, however, is not without its challenges. Your first Pon Farr can be especially disorienting when lost in the Delta Quadrant, 70,000 light years from the nearest Vulcan female. Just ask the apple of Vorik's eye and the object of his chemical-imbalanced affection, Lieutenant Torres.

In this episode of To The Journey, hosts Kay Shaw and Zachary Fruhling scratch the Vulcan seven-year itch with a character analysis of Ensign Vorik, including his internalization of Tom Paris's 20th-century advice not to lose one's Vulcan cool.

"Pathfinder" Commentary.

Fans of Star Trek: The Next Generation were treated to not just one, but two, Next Generation cast members reprising their roles in the sixth-season episode of Star Trek: Voyager, "Pathfinder": Dwight Schultz as the nervous but endearing Lieutenant Reginald Barclay, and Marina Sirtis as Counselor Deanna Troi.

In this episode of To The Journey, hosts Zachary Fruhling and Kay Shaw sit down together for a "Pathfinder" audio commentary while fellow To The Journey host Suzanne Williamson is temporarily lost in some holographic fantasy along with Lieutenant Barclay and Commander Chakotay (who, coincidentally, forgoes a Starfleet uniform in favor of his Maquis leather, both in Lieutenant Barclay's holographic fantasy, and in Suzanne's).

The Void.

With Voyager trapped inside a region of space absent of any matter, and under threat of siege by numerous alien vessels, Captain Janeway goes recruiting to form a mini-Federation alliance with the captains of some of the alien vessels, to pool their resources, to provide for their mutual protection, and to increase their collective chances of returning to normal space.

In this episode of To The Journey, hosts Kay Shaw and Zachary Fruhling are joined by Trek.fm content manager Justin Oser as they spread the good news of Captain Janeway's budding alliance in their discussion of the seventh-season Voyager episode "The Void."

The Hirogen (VOY) and the Hunters (DS9: "Captive Pursuit") Comparison.

It's clearly unethical to hunt another sentient being for sport; well, unless you are the Hirogen in Star Trek: Voyager or unless you are the Hunters in the first-season Deep Space Nine episode "Captive Pursuit." But while nicely-pressed red uniforms and glow-in-the-dark space helmets may be the hunting attire of choice for the Hunters in "Captive Pursuit" (hearkening back to the great English redcoat fox hunts of old Earth), the Hirogen took the sport of hunting to a more violent and more visceral level.

In this episode of To The Journey, hosts Zachary Fruhling and Kay Shaw compare and contrast the tribal and nomadic Hirogen from Voyager with the more gentlemanly Tosk-hunters from the first-season Deep Space Nine episode "Captive Pursuit." Did the Hunters in Deep Space Nine provide the germ of the idea, and the model for, the more violent Hirogen in Voyager? And what is the Federation's moral responsibility to those being hunted, Tosk or otherwise, in light of the Federation's respect for the universal rights of individuals, in light of the non-interference policy of the Prime Directive, and in light of having tolerance for other cultures without those pesky human notions of morality?

Plus, we break mid-show for a very special announcement from fellow To The Journey host, Suzanne Williamson, who has successfully sought out new life!

Lieutenant Carey Character Analysis.

Recurring character Lieutenant Joe Carey may have met an untimely demise in the seventh-season Voyager episode "Friendship One," just missing the ride back home to the Alpha Quadrant in "Endgame." But the mild-mannered Starfleet engineer, with hair ever-so-slightly reminiscent of Chief O'Brien's, made a big impression on Voyagerfans, despite appearing in relatively few episodes of Voyager.

In this episode of To The Journey, hosts Kay Shaw, Suzanne Williamson, and Zachary Fruhling go hunting for poisoned apples and accept a friendly lunch invitation for a character analysis of fan-favorite recurring character, Lieutenant Joe Carey (after being exonerated from giving Federation technology to the Kazon, of course).

Star Trek: Voyager never had a proper clip show like Star Trek: The Next Generation's infamous "Shades of Gray." Desert Island Episodes - Voyager Season 2.

It's no secret that Zachary, Kay, and Suzanne are fans of the second season Voyagerepisode "Resolutions," especially with its Janeway/Chakotay fodder for the imagination. But there is more to season 2 of Star Trek: Voyager than "Resolutions"! From weighty life-or-death decisions in "Tuvix" to essential Chakotay backstory in "Tattoo," season 2 is where we begin to know and love the Voyager family.

In this episode of To The Journey, hosts Zachary Fruhling, Kay Shaw, and Suzanne Williamson compare their top three "desert island" picks from season 2 of Star Trek: Voyager. The Sequel.

When To The Journey hosts Kay Shaw, Zachary Fruhling, and Suzanne Williamson wrote their first hypothetical Voyager feature film, The Progenitors (To The Journey 198: The Progenitors), there were always plans for a sequel, especially as The Progenitors left more than a few loose ends to tie up. From the Voyager crew being stranded aboard a 29th-century time ship to the sudden and inexplicable appearance of Henry Starling, The Progenitors created more questions than it answered. In this episode of To The Journey, join Kay, Zachary, and Suzanne in the writers' room as they aim higher, go deeper, and pull no punches while crafting their Voyager sequel, The Progenitors II!

Favorite Tom Paris / EMH Moments.

Tom Paris and The Doctor may have been an unlikely comedic duo, but over seven seasons, both in and out of sickbay, they somehow became Voyager's Odd Couple. The relationship between Tom and The Doctor, however, runs deeper than mere comedy. Beneath all of the friendly banter, and the mostly friendly ribbing, lies genuine friendship, mutual respect, and lessons in life and humanity for both Tom and The Doctor.

In this episode of To The Journey, hosts Suzanne Williamson, Zachary Fruhling, and Kay Shaw share their favorite character moments between Voyager's irrepressible helmsman and its acerbic but compassionate Mark I Emergency Medical Hologram.

Dragon's Teeth.

Resurrecting an ancient civilization is tricky business, especially when the Prime Directive is on the line, and doubly so when that ancient civilization has access to subspace corridors that could shave thousands of light years off your trip home to the Alpha Quadrant. Such is the situation in which we find Captain Janeway and the rest of the Voyager Crew when Seven of Nine takes it upon herself to awaken the Vaadwaur, asleep for 900 years in stasis pods after the near total annihilation of their planet.

In this episode of To The Journey, hosts Zachary Fruhling, Suzanne Williamson, and Kay Shaw have an ancient-world-style throw-down over the sixth-season Voyagerepisode "Dragon's Teeth." Join Zachary, Suzanne, and Kay as they resurrect an ancient civilization, accept that it is raining, and walk with dignity while listening to some less-than-cheerful Talaxian nursery rhymes (in the old tongue, naturally).

Lon Suder.

It's Murder on the Delta Quadrant Express! The second-season Voyager episode "Meld" may not have been much of a murder mystery, since the whodunnit is resolved so quickly. "Meld," however, introduced us to one of the most memorable characters in all of Star Trek: Voyager, the not-quite-empathetic and disturbingly intense Betazoid, crewman Lon Suder.

In this episode of To The Journey, hosts Kay Shaw, Suzanne Williamson, and Zachary Fruhling, along with Lieutenant Tuvok, take a deep dive inside the mind of Lon Suder. Do they find that everyone contains a tiny bit of Lon Suder inside? And is every Lon Suder perhaps really a mild-mannered botanist at heart?

Hobbies on Voyager.

Facing a 70-year journey from the Delta Quadrant back home to Federation space, the crew of Voyager, out of necessity, finds plenty of ways to pass the time, from holo-photography and opera to Kadis-kot and Kal-toh. But which hobbies from the 20th and 21st centuries have survived into the 24th century, and which hobbies have faded into historical obscurity (perhaps to be revived by Tom Paris)? In this episode of To The Journey, hosts Suzanne Williamson, Kay Shaw, and Zachary Fruhling discuss the many hobbies and pastimes seen throughout Star Trek: Voyager.

Voyager Costumes.

Star Trek: Voyager contained an impressive array of costumes, from historical outfits in the "Janeway Lambda One" holonovel and "Fair Haven," to the retro-futuristic costumes of "Captain Proton," to alternate Starfleet uniforms, such as rather dapper-looking flight suits and rather less dapper-looking training uniforms. Add in the alien-of-the-week wardrobes of the Kazon, the Vidiians, the Hirogen, and countless other Delta Quadrant races, and Voyager provides a veritable Delta Quadrant fashion show from week to week!

In this episode of To The Journey, hosts Suzanne Williamson, Zachary Fruhling, and Kay Shaw discuss the best and worst of Voyager costuming. Find out which costumes are Suzanne's, Zachary's, and Kay's most and least favorite costumes in all of Voyager. And who exactly holds Neelix's dappled, multi-color apron as the epitome of Star Trek fabrics?

Favorite Kes/Tuvok Moments.

Considering that Kes and Tuvok are perhaps the calmest, coolest, and most collected characters in Star Trek: Voyager, the moments they share together onscreen are remarkably volatile and intense! But despite this intensity, their friendship and working relationship are characterized by sincere trust, mutual respect, and admiration. Tuvok frequently serves as a mentor for Kes, guiding her as she explores and develops her unique mental abilities. And Kes, in turn, helps Tuvok balance his logic, his emotions, and his relationships with the rest of the Voyager crew. In this episode of To The Journey, hosts Zachary Fruhling, Suzanne Williamson, and Kay Shaw peer beyond the subatomic to share their favorite Kes/Tuvok moments in Star Trek: Voyager

"Fair Haven" Rewrite.

Voyager fans tend to fall into one of two categories: those that love "Fair Haven" and those that loathe "Fair Haven." In this episode of To The Journey, hosts Zachary Fruhling, Kay Shaw, and Suzanne Williamson attempt to make "Fair Haven" a bit more palatable to the latter with a "Fair Haven" rewrite! Follow the crew of To The Journey in search of the pot of gold-pressed latinum at the end of the rainbow, omnipotent leprechauns, and Fair Haven limericks:

There once was hologram from Fair Haven
Who was stuck in a situation most graven.
He went on a quest
With a clover on his breast
And all the Irish lasses were wavin'.

There once was a Q from the continuum
Who was stuck in Fair Haven for a millennium.
He wore green shiny pants
And caused a romance
And their love was as strong as tritanium.

Favorite Captain Janeway / Seven of Nine Moments.

Kate Mulgrew and Jeri Ryan shared a lot of of screen time as Captain Janeway and Seven of Nine in seasons 4 through 7 of Star Trek: Voyager. Most of these moments, however, seem to fall into one of three categories: (1) Seven of Nine learns something about humanity from Captain Janeway, (2) Captain Janeway and Seven share a heartfelt bonding moment, and (3) Seven of Nine gets under Captain Janeway's skin. In this episode of To The Journey, hosts Kay Shaw, Zachary Fruhling, and Suzanne Williamson share their favorite Captain Janeway / Seven of Nine moments in Star Trek: Voyager

Tuvok Unhinged.

Vulcans are generally known for being calm, cool, rational, and collected. But every once in a while even a Vulcan can come unglued at the seams. And our favorite Vulcan member of the Voyager crew, the one and only Mr. Tuvok, is no exception. Over Voyager's seven-year journey, we see Tuvok mind melding, Pon Farring, cake baking, wax flower making, flashbacking, emotion repressing, brain igniting, and even strolling onto the bridge sans uniform! (Okay, that last one was just a bad dream, but still....) In this episode of To The Journey, hosts Suzanne Williamson, Kay Shaw, and Zachary Fruhling compare their favorite "Tuvok Unhinged" moments in Star Trek: Voyager.

"Emanations" Commentary.

What happens when we die? Is it simply "lights out"? Do we commune with our ancestors in some kind of afterlife? Or are we sucked into a subspace vacuole, swept away to decompose into a web of biopolymer residue on some backwater asteroid in a distant planetary ring system? In this episode of To The Journey, join hosts Zachary Fruhling, Kay Shaw, and Suzanne Williamson for a commentary on the first-season Voyager episode "Emanations." Join an away mission to the afterlife with Zachary, Kay, Suzanne, and Ensign Kim. But don't forget your biopolymer silk T-shirt for your debut in that big Lady Gaga concert in the sky!

Thirty Days.

Of all the characters in Star Trek: Voyager, perhaps Tom Paris had the greatest degree of character growth during Voyager's run, developing from an immature ex-convict into a responsible Starfleet officer and helmsman, and a loving husband and father. The fifth-season episode "Thirty Days," however, sees Tom Paris once again in trouble with the law, and with Captain Janeway. But this time, the broken and newly demoted Ensign Paris spends his thirty days in the brig because he acted on his principles and his conscience, defying orders from the captain who gave him his second chance only five years before. In this episode of To The Journey, hosts Zachary Fruhling, Kay Shaw, and Suzanne Williamson share their thoughts on Tom's seafaring aspirations and on the inner struggles of Voyager's beloved fly-boy.

194: Come Sail Away

Coda.

It's safe to say that Voyager fans generally have strong feelings about the third-season episode "Coda." Janeway/Chakotay shippers tend to embrace this episode for its tender and impassioned portrayal of the special bond between Commander Chakotay and Captain Janeway. And although "Coda" suffers from the Voyager reset-button effect (after an impressive number of Janeway death scenes!), "Coda" reveals the depth of affection that the Voyager crew share for their beloved captain. From old-fashioned resuscitation techniques to the contrasting portrayals of tenderness and suspense, hosts Suzanne Williamson, Zachary Fruhling, and Kay Shaw bare their souls about all things "Coda."

192: But It Never Really Happened

Voyager Continuity.

Voyager is sometimes criticized for not having the same degree of continuity as Deep Space Nine or Enterprise. But in this episode of To The Journey, hosts Kay Shaw, Suzanne Williamson, and Zachary Fruhling discuss various examples of continuity in Voyager, from callbacks to previous episodes to continuity with the rest of the Star Trek universe. Together Kay, Suzanne, and Zachary argue that, despite all-too-frequent use of the dreaded episodic reset button, Voyager has its own unique brand of storytelling continuity that serves the development of Voyager's overall tale.

What Made Voyager a Family.

In the beginning, stranded in the middle of uncharted space was a divided crew against a slew of enemy aliens. It's a miracle Voyager got home at all, much less in seven years. But Voyager was the little ship that could, and one of the biggest reasons why was due to its crew. The transition of uniting Starfleet and Maquis crews into one had its initial hiccups (Seska and Jonas, anyone?), but eventually the people running Voyager became more than just a crew. They became a family.

In this last episode of To The Journey hosted by Charlynn Schmiedt and Tristan Riddell, they discuss everything that made Voyager a family. They parallel how real-life circumstances might have united the actors that portrayed the crew, how a family atmosphere was portrayed on the show (or in some cases, maybe not enough), and how that cemented the show's place as a unique entity in the Star Trek universe.

To all of our Trek family, we thank you for joining us for our four glorious years of talking Voyager. To The Journey! —Tristan and Char

"Author, Author" Commentary.

Just about any episode centered around The Doctor is likely to be entertaining. What's better than that? Well, what about an episode that's as entertaining as it is thought-provoking? Cue Voyager's "Author, Author," which aired in the last third of the seventh season. Motivated by the knowledge that EMH Mark I holograms like himself have been relegated to menial jobs, The Doctor has written "Photons Be Free," a holonovel that is loosely based on his experience aboard Voyager. But when the crew sees thinly-veiled exaggerations of themselves being portrayed in the program, they're not exactly happy. Join Tristan and Char in this episode of To The Journey as they break out the quills, the smoking jackets and the Netflix as they comment on the shenanigans that ensue as The Doctor fights for his intellectual property rights.

188: Year of Fury

"Fury" in the Mirror Universe.

In the previous episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan set the stage for the next installment of the mirror universe series, so why not keep going? It's time for Kes' revenge!

Three years have passed between the story written in the last TTJ and this one, which means some serious shenanigans have gone down aboard the ISS Intrepid. With the balance of power always in flux in the mirror universe, who's controlling what — and whom? And meanwhile, what has Kes been doing since she fled the Intrepid? She returns, just as she promised to Tuvok and B'Elanna, but what tricks does she have up her sleeve? Tune in and find out how Char and Tristan wrap up their Voyager mirror universe.

That's right, this is the last episode that will feature the mirror universe because Char and Tristan have an important announcement: They will end their four-year tenure on To The Journey with episode 190, set for release on Nov. 10. 187: Purple Stuff

Voyager Mirror Universe, Part 5.

In the same way that little kids will repeat an action if it makes an adult laugh, Char and Tristan are here to give the listeners what they want. And what they want is more adventures aboard the ISS Intrepid, better known as the Voyager mirror universe. Char and Tristan started creating their interpretation of the mirror Voyager crew in the Delta Quadrant back in TTJ 114, and in this fifth installment written on-the-fly, the story's focus centers on Kes and Neelix. They have both been indentured servants in exchange for being rescued by the Kazon shortly after the Intrepid found itself in the Delta Quadrant. After three years of serving the crew, Neelix thinks it's time he and Kes moved on, but Janeway doesn't think they have repaid their debt in full. What now? Tune in to this fifth installment of the Voyager mirror universe and find out.

186: All Natural Borg Birth

Origin of the Borg.

Ask a Star Trek fan about the how the Borg collective got started, and you might hear a few different theories. One is that the collective was started after V'ger joined with Decker in Star Trek: The Motion Picture. Others point to stories in Star Trek literature that reveal the Borg Queen's rise to power over countless millions. But the truth is, nothing in canon states how the Borg came to be. Therefore, as promised at the end of the last show, Char and Tristan put their collective heads together and come up with their own version of how the Borg originated in this episode of To The Journey. Did their story match up to any theories of your own? Contact us at trek.fm/contact or on Twitter (@ohtheprofanity and @TheInsaneRobin) and let us know!

185: Time Traveling Neelix

Voyager as an Animated Series.

Star Trek's animated series is an often overlooked edition in the show's extensive catalogue. Yes, it was short-lived and yes, it wasn't always good, but it also made the most of telling Star Trek stories in an animated format — especially on a ridiculously low budget. But when we say that The Animated Series has an important place in Trek lore, don't take our word for it; instead, tune into Trek.fm's Saturday Morning Trek, which explores all facets of Star Trek in the 1970s.

In this episode of To the Journey, Char and Tristan ponder an animated version of Voyager. How would it be developed and distributed if it were being produced today? What sort of stories would it tell? How would animation lend itself to new things that couldn't have been done on the live action series? They think through these questions and more, so tune in and let us know what you think of the idea of an animated Voyager series.

184: Janeway Sideboob

"Resolutions" Commentary.

Sometimes when things in life get tough, you've got to indulge in a little bit of comfort. For Char and Tristan, that comfort is a heaping serving of Janeway and Chakotay goodness. In this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan indulge in "Resolutions," the episode that drove the J/C shippers wild 20 years ago...and still does. It's got the implausible romance setup of a man and a woman alone together on a planet, a bathtub, headboards, ancient legends, and of course, a primate. All the makings of a perfect love story for two people coming from vastly different backgrounds, but slowly coming together...until Tuvok and the Voyager crew come racing back to New Earth and rip them away from all that could have been. Le sigh.

183: It's a G Thing

Create a New Character.

With all the untapped potential Voyager had, it's not much of a surprise that "what if" speculations are a regular component of To The Journey. And guess what — this week is yet another scenario where Char and Tristan let their imaginations do the talking. This week, they add a member to the crew, describe his or her role on the ship, and explain how this character integrates with the other regulars. And before you ask, no, this isn't a "replace Seven of Nine with another character" discussion; in fact, that was already done on TTJ 135! This character is someone new who isn't replacing anybody.

But wait — aren't there plenty of people already in this large ensemble cast? Yes. Is there really a void another character could fill? Absolutely, yes. Listen and find out how Char and Tristan made their scenarios work.
