182: No Money. No Problems

Career Paths in the Future.

You're 18 years old and a fresh graduate of Zefram Cochrane High School. The whole galaxy is your oyster. What do you do with your life?

In this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan talk about the sort of life they would lead if money wasn't a factor in the workforce. While it's unfortunate that most of us don't have such a luxury in the 21st century, people in the 24th century do; in fact, one of Star Trek's biggest messages of hope is that some of our greatest problems (often connected to money) will be gone in the future. With basic life needs met and a social mentality of bettering humanity, what sort of things do Char and Tristan think they would do if they lived in the 24th century? Would factors such as education affect their attainment goals? Would their callings be the same? Listen on, find out, and ponder your own ideal self in the future.

181: USS Germophobe

Rewrite of "The Disease."

Love hurts, and no one on Voyager knows that better than Harry Kim. He left behind his fiancee back on Earth and he's been down on his luck since, having unsuccessfully fallen for a hologram, an ex-Borg, and the wrong Delaney sister. When he falls madly in love Derran Tal in "The Disease," it's really not a surprise that something went wrong. Not only must Harry answer to an angry Mama Bear Janeway when she finds out Harry didn't file his "I wanna make love with an alien" paperwork, but he also gets a raging case of space herpes. Poor Harry doesn't ever catch a break.

In this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan take the elements of "The Disease" they did like and transform the rest into their own episode rewrites. Does Harry still glow when they're finished with him? Listen and find out.

180: Flip Your Ship

A Chakotay/B'Elanna Prequel.

Before finding peace at Janeway's side aboard Voyager, Chakotay was a self-described "angry warrior." A former Starfleet officer, he joined the Maquis to fight for his home planet against the Cardassians, and we unfortunately know little else. A recent listener email suggested that Char and Tristan write a pre-"Caretaker" story about the "angry warrior," so in this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan do just that. They write an episode on the spot that starts with Chakotay telling a story to the senior staff during Ancestor's Eve, which takes us all back to Chakotay and B'Elanna's Maquis days. The story reveals several things, such as how Chakotay recruited B'Elanna into becoming his chief engineer about the Val Jean, but also a detail about Chakotay's life that few know. It shocked Janeway and it might shock you, so tune in and find out what it is.

179: Mic Whip

"Bride of Chaotica! Commentary.

One of the most incredible parts of the convention experience is the cosplay, whether putting a costume together yourself or simply admiring the craftiness of others. With Star Trek Las Vegas still on their brains, Char and Tristan thought it was finally time they tackled a commentary of "Bride of Chaotica!" That way, they could talk about some of the incredible cosplay they saw at STLV that was inspired by this episode, and discuss which character(s) from Captain Proton they'd choose if they were dressing up. And, in the midst of Captain Janeway burying herself in the part of Queen Arachnia, Char and Tristan could justify talking incessantly about Kate Mulgrew's prowess — not that they need a reason for that, but a convenient segue doesn't hurt. So queue up this Voyager fan favorite and listen as Char and Tristan talk about why they appreciate this episode so much.

Star Trek Las Vegas.

Every year around the first weekend in August, the Rio Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas is taken over with people dressed in Starfleet uniforms from every era, as well as Andorians, Klingons, Tellariates....and even Fear?! Ohh my! Star Trek Las Vegas takes the honor of being the largest Star Trek convention in the world, and this year was even bigger thanks to the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the original series. In this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan report live with guest Matt Hansen from The Nerd Party about the whirlwind time they had at Star Trek Las Vegas. They discuss what it was like when they met in person for the first time, the panels they attended, and the favorite things they experienced while at the convention. Even if you were at the convention yourself, this is an episode you don't want to miss!

177: Candy Corn

"Time and Again" rewrite.

The Voyager episode "Time and Again" does not stand out by any stretch of the imagination. In fact, it is forgettable — and you *can* forget about it because in the end, the events that occur in the story are reset by mucking about with time! In this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan give "Time and Again" some love and think of ways they could improve the story and make it more noteworthy.

Char and Tristan will be at Star Trek Las Vegas next week! Not only will they record an episode of TTJ in person for the first time, but they will also be contestants on the Super BridgeMates panel happening at 12:30 p.m. on August 5 on the Roddenberry stage. 176: Jeri Taylor Lovefest

Working in the Writer's Room.

From the very beginning Voyager was loaded with potential, which was sadly not used to the fullest extent onscreen. On the bright side, it left fans like Char and Tristan a plethora of untapped possibilities to explore. In fact, episode rewrites and original stories that resolve loose threads have become To the Journey staples! In this episode, Char and Tristan transport themselves to the writer's room at Paramount Studios in 1996, when Jeri Taylor was in charge of Voyager. As wunderkinds who managed to finagle their way into the writer's room, Char and Tristan have some influence in guiding the direction of the show during the third season. What sort of things do they pitch to the staff, who is likeliest to shoot them down, and just how much do they suck up to Jeri Taylor? Tune in and find out.

Tom Paris Marathon.

It's a crisp Sunday in October. The coffee's ready, the blankets are out, and Netflix is calling your name. It's time for a Voyager marathon.

Longtime To The Journey listeners know how much Char and Tristan love creating five-episode marathons. So it should come as no surprise that in this episode, they resurrect the character-based marathon series they started tens of episodes ago and create a marathon centered around their favorite Tom Paris moments. 174: Grand Theft Starship

Writing TNG's "The Game" into Voyager.

Addiction is a powerful and potentially destructive thing. We saw just how quickly the cycle can start (and spread) in The Next Generation's "The Game," where a seemingly innocent game from Risa turned into a mind control ploy as a way of taking over the Enterprise. In this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan take the story from "The Game" and rewrite it into the Voyager paradigm. Without a Starfleet Academy cadet and a young Ashley Judd aboard, who will save the ship? Tune in and find out.

173: Architect of Joy

Bryan Fuller.

When the news broke that Bryan Fuller was named the showrunner for the new Star Trek series set to debut in 2017, fan reaction was highly positive. Not only do Trek fans know of Fuller as someone who broke into Hollywood with a spec script for Deep Space Nine, but he wrote several episodes of Voyager and worked his way up to becoming a co-producer by the seventh season. Since then, Fuller has only continued to build a positive reputation as a producer with shows such as Dead Like Me, Pushing Daisies, and Hannibal. In this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan discuss Fuller's contribution to Voyager as a writer and how those episodes might provide hints as to what we can expect from Fuller as the showrunner of the newest Trek series.

172: You Can Borrow My Body

"Endgame" Commentary.

After 172 episodes over the course of seven years, Voyager finished its journey and made it home. For To The Journey, it's been three and a half years and also 172 episodes. To commemorate this milestone, Char and Tristan deemed an "Endgame" commentary as an appropriate celebration. They start out drinking tea, but promptly switch to coffee when they realize how wrong it was that they were drinking tea in the first place (that's Earl Grey's territory). Char and Tristan consider many topics during this commentary, such as the awesome prospect of how certain Voyager characters could make it on the new series set to debut in 2017. Just who do they believe really should have died in "Endgame?" Also, they discuss how the cast and crew felt as the show they worked on for seven years came to a close. And what exactly was that type of shuttlecraft, anyway? Catch this and much more in this episode of To The Journey.

171: The One Where B'Elanna Goes to Hell

Episodes that Exceeded Their Potential.

Have you ever cringed at those one-sentence episode summaries on Memory Alpha or Netflix? You are not alone. Sometimes they break down the plot so simplistically that the summary makes the episode sound boring, cliche, or downright bad. Sometimes they barely describe the plot at all. The lesson to be learned here is that one should not judge an episode based on these descriptions.

In this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan take that lesson to heart and list their top five episodes that exceed their potential. On paper, the plots of these episodes might not sound enticing, but they shined on screen. Some that made the list are fan favorites. Others are highly overlooked. All of them excelled as episodes of Voyager.

Voyager Mirror Universe Story.

Gather around everyone, it is time for another round of Voyager story time. In this episode of To the Journey, Char and Tristan return to the Voyager Mirror Universe they created. It is a crazy world where Ensign Kim feels entitled to power as a descendant of Empress Sato, and Captain Janeway shamelessly plays with the emotions of her first officer in the name of reaching the Alpha Quadrant just a second sooner. In this chapter things get a little bit bloody. Members of the engineering team are being killed off and all signs point to Chief Engineer Torres as the culprit. 169: Compliment Sandwich

Interview with Garrett Wang.

When Voyager first began, Ensign Harry Kim was a fresh Starfleet Academy graduate with a promising future. Young and gullible, he was often labeled the "green ensign" by fans. The actor behind the character, Garrett Wang, was also young when he landed the role in his mid-twenties. Beyond that similarity, however, Harry Kim is a far cry from the man who played him.

Wang's seemingly endless supply of enthusiasm is something fans often note when they meet him at conventions. He speaks honestly about his experience working on Voyager, giving equal footing to positive and negative aspects of it during panels. He does the same in this episode of To The Journey, where for the first time in TTJ history Char and Tristan talk with a main Voyager cast member. They discuss the untapped comedic talent Voyager had among its cast, Wang's Voyager movie pitch, reprising the role of Harry Kim for Star Trek Online, and much more.

168: "Ghost Captain"

Episode Comparison.

It has been awhile since Char and Tristan have compared an episode of Voyager to another episode of a Trek series. In this episode of To The Journey, they are doing it in full force. Not only do they compare plot points of Voyager's "Coda" to The Next Generation's "Cause and Effect," but they throw TNG's "The Next Phase" into the mix as well. It is a three-for-two bargain that examines the intricacies of recurring time loops and discusses what officers should do if others mistake them for dead. We hope this will prevent listeners from entering distortions in the space-time continuum, blowing up their ships every day for 80 years and being none the wiser.

167: Representation Matters

Voyager's Impact and Legacy.

As The Next Generation ended its TV run and set sail for the silver screen in 1994, The Powers That Be™ Rick Berman, Michael Piller, and Jeri Taylor announced that a new incarnation of the Star Trek franchise would debut early in the following year. The show would take place in uncharted space and feature a starship NOT named Enterprise. And, most notably, the ship would be captained by a woman.

Now, more than 20 years after the show's debut, opinions about Voyager's place in the Star Trek legacy remain mixed, just as they were when the show aired. In this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan examine aspects of where Voyager thrived and failed as a Star Trek series, why these things happened the way they did, and how these examples might serve as lessons for the team developing the next series set to debut in 2017.

How has Voyager influenced you? How do you feel about Voyager's legacy in the Star Trek universe? Please share your thoughts at trek.fm/contact, The Babel Conference on Facebook, or on Twitter (@ohtheprofanity and @TheInsaneRobin). We may read and discuss your thoughts on an upcoming show.

Season Seven Essential Voyager.

It's been a long road getting from there to-

Wait, wrong show.

These *were* the-

No.

Let's skip the frills and just say it: This is the last edition of Essential Voyager. Sob!

Char and Tristan have had a blast evaluating Voyager episode by episode, season by season. Now it all comes full circle in this last installment, where they slash Voyager's final season down to the essentials in this episode of To The Journey. With this multi-part series now concluded, Char and Tristan will need a new angle for reviewing each season. You know they'll find a way just as Voyager found her way home, but will they break the Temporal Prime Directive to do it?

165: Intuition

Top five Janeway/Seven Moments.

One of the most complicated relationships on Voyager was the constant struggle between Captain Janeway and Seven of Nine. Janeway, always in need of a reform project, almost bit off more than she could chew with the former Borg drone who struggled with her separation from the collective and forming an individual identity. The process put the two constantly at odds and was a heavy point of focus in the last half of Voyager's run. In this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan list their five favorite moments between the two characters, ranging from tough times to simple moments of friendship.

Tristan and Char have been on a creative streak lately. Two episodes ago, they conducted a session in the writer's room and improvised an episode live during the recording. Then, they explored what Voyager might look like in the JJ-verse. For this episode, they are still feeling the creative vibes, so Char and Tristan are back in the writer's room for a rewrite of Deep Space Nine's "Fascination." In this Season Three episode, a Bajoran holiday ritual mixes with telepathy and the crew starts forming unlikely infatuations with one another. Since Voyager never got its version of this "Naked Now"/"Naked Time"-esque storytelling, Char and Tristan take the premise from "Fascination" and rework it into Voyager. Who pursues whom and do they make out? You will have to listen to the episode and find out.

163: Ample Nacelles

Voyager in the JJ-Verse.

Star Trek loves playing with timelines. We have seen every incarnation of the franchise play with possibilities outside of what we consider "our" timeline, from Edith Keeler in the 1930s to Captain Janeway on in the 29th century. Aside from the "prime" universe and the Mirror Universe, we now have the Abramsverse. In this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan envision what Voyager and her crew would be like in the timeline created in the JJ Abrams-produced films. They discuss the likelihood of a Vulcan on the ship, a CGI alien as a regular cast member, the aesthetics of key areas of the ship, and much more. And yes, lens flares are still a thing in the 24th century.

162: Undercover Chef

Episode On the Fly.

Char and Tristan have been recording To The Journey every week for the last 3+ years. One of the things they have learned in that time is that they make a crackerjack writing team. They have also learned that they have fun thinking on their feet. In this episode of To The Journey, they do both and write an episode of Voyager on the fly. That's right — with no preparation beforehand, they hit record and develop a full-length episode live on the podcast! This go round, the story centers around Tuvok, where he puts his undercover investigative talents — and his principles as a Vulcan Starfleet officer — to the test.

160: Bartering with the Irish

Season Six Essential Voyager.

Popular opinion among Voyager fans states that the show hit its peak in seasons four and five. If that is true, then where do the last two seasons stand in comparison to Voyager's heyday? In an effort to answer that question in this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan return to their Essential Voyager series. They examine each episode for its importance to the characters, Voyager's journey home, the series as a whole, and condense the season down to mandatory viewing. Listen and find out if Season Six measures up to totals from previous seasons, or if it falls short of expectations...much like a malfunctioning holographic boyfriend.

To The Journey 159: Conversation is Irrelevant

TTJ AMA 2.

Char and Tristan know that listeners love it when they get a little personal. Some of the most popular episodes of To The Journey do just that, and it's the same reason why they did a Reddit-style "Ask Me Anything" in TTJ 137. That episode received so much of a response that Char and Tristan decided to open the floodgates once again and solicit questions from Twitter, The Babel Conference, and via email. In this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan answer questions from listeners about art, their thoughts on the X-Files revival, who they would not want to be alone with in the Delta Flyer, and so much more. Many thanks to everyone who sent in questions!

To The Journey 158: Broken Delta Flyer

Five-episode Janeway Marathon.

Longtime To The Journey listeners know that Char and Tristan love marathoning Voyager on a lazy Sunday afternoon. They have created marathons for all seven seasons in episodes past. Now they are tackling character-centric marathons. In this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan each make a list of five episodes they would marathon about Voyager's fearless leader, Captain Kathryn Janeway. She is intelligent, can be a complete badass when the time calls, and though she is compassionate, she does not suffer fools gladly. Once you have listened to Char and Tristan's picks for a Janeway marathon, chime in with your own on The Babel Conference on Facebook or on Twitter (@ohtheprofanity and @TheInsaneRobin).

To The Journey 157: Mãsh

Voyager Rewrite of TNG's "Captain's Holiday."

What do you do when your captain refuses to take a much-needed vacation? As a crew member, you conspire with your peers and *make* it happen. That's what the crew of the Enterprise-D did to Captain Picard, and in this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan do the same to Captain Janeway. With no prior preparation, Char and Tristan craft a rewrite of TNG's "Captain's Holiday" and give it a Voyager spin. Listen on and find out what sort of shenanigans ensue when Janeway meets her Vash.

To The Journey 156: Matt Ships Seven/Bashir

Voyager in the Dominion War.

Char and Tristan love playing "what if" and this week they have a humdinger. In this episode of To The Journey, Char, Tristan and special guest Matt Rushing ponder just what might have happened if Voyager had made it home during the Dominion War, an important storyline in Deep Space Nine. They explore the possibilities of when and how Voyager made it home, as well as how Voyager could have played a unique part in ending the war. Also -- perhaps most importantly -- what does Voyager do when the Dominion War is over and the series still has two more seasons to produce until its conclusion? Listen on to hear all of this and more.

To The Journey 155: Holographic Sex on the Beach

Top Five Tom/Harry Moments.

Bromance is a beautiful thing. The Original Series had Kirk and Spock. TNG had Data and Geordi. On Deep Space Nine, it was all about Miles and Julian. On Voyager, Tom and Harry had the ultimate friendship. In this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan reveal their top five moments between these two friends. To The Journey 154: Resting Vulcan Face

"Twisted" Commentary.

Bottle shows aren't often highly regarded among the fans as standouts since the lack of budget is often apparent in the final cut. However, the Season Two episode "Twisted" sits among Tristan's favorites. It's a bottle show, yes, but it still has enjoyable character moments. Watch along and listen as Char and Tristan lose themselves in their commentary for "Twisted," where Char pays extra attention to Robert Beltran's behavior and Tristan...wait, where did Tristan go?!

To The Journey 153: Mosh Pit of Emotion

"Infinite Regress" Rewrite.

One of Char and Tristan's favorite things to do on To The Journey is rewrite an episode of Voyager that could have used some extra love. On the block this go around is "Infinite Regress", an episode that is dynamic but lacks the long-term impact of a synthetic pathogenic virus. Grab your Kadis-kot board, listen in and find out how Char and Tristan would give "Infinite Regress" a new personality (or multiple) in their rewrites of this episode from Voyager's fifth season.

To The Journey 152: Prax is Essential

Essential Voyager, Season Five.

It's time once again for Essential Voyager! In this round, Char and Tristan take on Season Five. For a season with several standouts and solid quality overall, it might have been easier to say "just watch them all" and leave it at that, but that doesn't make for good podcasting. Instead, Char and Tristan did their homework and examined each episode for essential-worthy status. Just how many episodes did they keep and how does that affect the overall percentage of Essential Voyager overall? Tune in and find out.

To The Journey 151: Hot Rod of the Delta Quadrant

The Small Things.

Char and Tristan love Voyager, no doubt about it. But it is not just the epic two-parters and the hope of getting home that make the show tick — it is the smaller details that make it endearing as well. In this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan discuss the finer elements of Voyager that they find captivating. Some things became a part of the show seemingly by accident, like Janeway's roster of hairdos through the seven-year run. Others were done quite intentionally, like the design of the Delta Flyer, and were so unique to Voyager that they couldn't go unnoticed. Please chime in on The Babel Conference, Twitter (@ohtheprofanity and @TheInsaneRobin) or email Char and Tristan (trek.fm/contact) and share the smaller details you cherish the most.

To The Journey 150: Strength, Passion, and Vulnerability

Vaughn Armstrong.

He's a man who has played several roles in Trek, from a Klingon in TNG to a semi-regular character on Enterprise, and several other roles in between. You could say he is everywhere in Trek. No, we're not talking about Jeffrey Combs, but we are talking about a man who belongs to an elite club of actors that have played seven or more different characters throughout the Star Trek franchise (Jeffrey Combs, J.G. Hertzler, Randy Oglesby, and Thomas Kopache are the others).

In this special 150th episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan talk with Vaughn Armstrong about his long-lived acting career; how he achieved and maintains his success; some of his favorite memories from working on the Trek shows; The Enterprise Blues Band; and much more.

To The Journey 149: Warnog

Prixin 2015.

First Ancestor's Eve...and now Prixin? How the time does fly! The holiday season is upon us and Char and Tristan have been busy setting up for Voyager's celebration of Prixin. This year's festivities are happening in Engineering, and that's not boding well for Tristan, who's having some...er, difficulty, with his supervisor. Meanwhile, Char is not fond of Neelix's "better than eggnog substitute." She's also in charge of the mistletoe. If the episode has meaning to Voyager's mission home or contains essential character moments, it remains in the timeline. Otherwise, it's chucked from the season faster than Janeway can say "TIIIIME'S UP!" Which episodes from the fourth season prevail and which ones lose their safety net, so to speak? To The Journey 147: Dreaming of Neil Armstrong

"11:59" Commentary.

For many the holiday season is a time filled with food, festivities, and family. It is also a time for reflection — to remember those before us, what has happened in the past year, and look to the future as we approach a new year. In this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan wax sentimental as they deliver a commentary on the Voyager Season Five episode "11:59." They reflect on their own ancestors, as well as the Janeway lineage; how Q could have made this episode better; how sometimes you can't help but live the rest of your life in the place where your car breaks down; and much more. To The Journey 146: Black Lace Nightie

Voyager's Mirror Universe, Part Three.

One of the most original things Char and Tristan have created on To The Journey is a vision of what Voyager might look like in the Mirror Universe. In previous episodes, they established how the ISS Intrepid got lost in the Delta Quadrant, gave backstory to the characters, and rewrote "The 37s" in Mirror Universe style. Now they're at it again, and in this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan write a story on the spot that takes place in their Mirror Universe. That's right — with no prior planning, they create a story from start to finish on the podcast. Tune in and find out what's happening in the latest installment of the Mirror Universe saga.

To The Journey 145: Mr. Vulcan

Top Five Tuvok and Neelix Moments.

Like Quark and Odo on Deep Space Nine, Neelix and Tuvok are the resident odd couple on Voyager. By their very nature, they are a juxtaposition. Tuvok is disciplined and orderly, whereas Neelix will improvise and work his way through things as he goes. Tuvok is a master at controlling his emotions, while Neelix expresses his emotions with exuberance. When it comes to soup, Tuvok prefers his plomeek bland but Neelix must have some spice. Despite these vast differences, at the heart of their friendship is trust and respect. In this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan break down their top five moments between Tuvok and Neelix.

To The Journey 144: Darmok 101

"Nemesis" Rewrite.

Chakotay-centric episodes are typically not highly-rated among the Star Trek fanbase. Most of them leave a lot to be desired, but "Nemesis" might be an exception. The episode explores what war does to the mind, and may have greater significance in our post-9/11 culture than it did when it first aired in 1997. In this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan take another look at what they thought was a mediocre episode. However, they realized they were both wrong but amped it up in their rewrites anyway. Listen on and find out how they would improve one of Season Four's most underrated and overlooked episodes.

To The Journey 143: A Stenographer's Dream

Episode Comparison.

Would you believe Will Riker if he said he wasn't putting the moves on a woman? What about former inmate Tom Paris if he claimed he didn't murder someone, but the victim's memories show otherwise? If you said "no," watch TNG's "A Matter of Perspective" and Voyager's "Ex Post Facto." Each episode uses the reputations of the story's main characters, Riker and Paris, against them. It is up to science and cold, hard facts (respectively) to prove their innocence. In this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan put on their detective hats and scrutinize Voyager's "Ex Post Facto" with TNG's "A Matter of Perspective." Does one mystery stand up better than the other? Examine the evidence and find out.

To The Journey 142: Bromance Forever

Essential Voyager, Season Three.

The time has come again for Essential Voyager! This time, the victim...er, subject, is Season Three. Char and Tristan review each episode and determine if it's necessary viewing or if it's better off being destroyed by sweaty Janeway and her phaser rifle. It is a season that arguably has the greatest ups and downs in terms of story quality. Does that make Char and Tristan's lives easier or more difficult when determining if an episode is essential to the Voyager story as a whole? Listen on and find out if their choices surprise you.

To The Journey 141: You're Both Jerks!

Top Five Favorite Moments from Season Six.

You know Char and Tristan love their top five lists. You know that they also love their multi-part series, dissected season by season. In this episode of To The Journey, they do both! Char and Tristan looked through everything in Voyager's sixth season, exploring all the nooks and crannies, and made a list of their top five moments. In a season with serious standouts such as "Tinker, Tenor, Doctor, Spy," it's not a matter of if an episode made their lists, but which moment. Just how predictable were Char and Tristan with their picks, anyway? Did something from "Fair Haven" make Tristan's list? How many Janeway/Chakotay moments did Char put on hers? The results may (or may not) surprise you. Tune in and find out.

To The Journey 140: InterQourse

"The Q and the Grey" Commentary.

It's time to break out the Civil War costumes and take sides, because the Q Continuum is at war!

Wait, what?

That's right, war, conducted by an omnipotent species that has claimed it is above such barbaric acts in the past. It is issues like that (and more) that Char and Tristan point out in this episode of To The Journey, where they deliver a commentary on the Season Three episode "The Q and the Grey." But never fear, it is not all negative. Q episodes are fan favorites for a reason. The endless stream of one-liners in this episode alone makes it worth the watch.

To The Journey 139: Counseling With Neelix

Recasting Voyager & "The Supercrew."

They're younger, they're hotter...they're the crew you've never seen before and never will...because it's all hypothetical!

Char and Tristan take two questions held over from their Reddit-style AMA in episode 137, "TTJ AMA OMG!" Kicking things off with who they would choose from all Trek series for key positions on their "supercrew." They then jump into their choices for Voyager if it was cast today, Abrams-style. They researched who was up and coming in Hollywood and proposed two distinctly different lists, based on different methodologies for finding the perfect matches for a new crew. After you listen to this episode of To The Journey, let Char and Tristan know which stars you would cast if Voyager was rebooted in 2015. To The Journey 138: George Clooney Found His Janeway

Top Five Out-of-Character Moments.

Whether it's due to a temporal rift or an alien virus, one of the most common ways that we as a Star Trek audience know that something isn't right is by making a character say or do something they normally would not. Our heroes sift through clues that help them determine what is going on so they can make things right...usually. There are times that these out-of character moments aren't as intentional but make it to the screen nevertheless. Sometimes it's a small glitch from a new writer or director who doesn't fully know a character. Other times, it's a glaring mistake that stems from sloppy and inconsistent writing. Whatever the reason, it's frustrating to the viewer. In this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan break down their top five out-of-character moments on Voyager, from microwormhole-sized gripes to macroviral errors.

To The Journey 136: Shattered Pelvis

Pairing Off.

In Voyager's earlier years, 75,000 light years was a long way from home. It seemed inevitable that the crew would spend the rest of their lives en route to the Alpha Quadrant. As Captain Janeway said, "All we have is each other," so it made sense that some members of the crew began falling in love and pairing off. What if we had seen more examples of this? In this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan explore possible pairings among the crew and determine if the relationship would be a hot fling, built to last, or the equivalent of a warp core breach.

To The Journey 135: Nerd Herd Immunity

The Season Four "Replacement."

In the summer hiatus of 1997, fans were on edge after viewing part one of the explosive "Scorpion" cliffhanger. With the news of a main cast member making an exit, fans did not know what to think. It was not known who was leaving until Season Four drew closer and Paramount revealed that Jennifer Lien (Kes) was being replaced by another actress.

Picture yourself in the writer's room and you are creating the new character who will debut in Season Four. What sort of character do you create? Char and Tristan play with this hypothetical scenario in this episode of To The Journey.

To The Journey 134: Nog's Faction

Season Two Essential Trek.

Every season of every Star Trek show there are some episodes that stand out more than others — but which ones are essential to their respective shows as a whole? Char and Tristan try to answer this question by continuing their series of "Essential Voyager," with Season Two. They examine each episode's importance to the season, the show as a whole, as well as its overall quality and determine if it's "must-see TV" or an installment worth bypassing. Listen on and find out if you agree with their choices, or if your rationale gives you a completely different list.

To The Journey 133: Go Set a Voyager

"Worst Case Scenario" Commentary.

If you could go back to the start of Voyager's mission and join the crew, would you sign on as a Starfleet officer or a member of the Maquis? Would you lead in a mutiny or fight back? The crew played around with this idea when they uncovered a holonovel Tuvok created at the start of Voyager's journey home as a way of preparing for such a scenario. Now, three years later, the holonovel is less of a preparation for a real situation and more of an entertaining story for the crew. Naturally, in the midst of all the fun, the crew hits some bumps along the way thanks to Seska, the Bajoran-turned-Cardassian spy who defected to the Kazon. In this episode of To The Journey, Tristan Riddell and guest host Phillip Gilfus from Earl Grey dress into their Maquis garb and deliver a commentary on "Worst Case Scenario." Queue up the episode and follow along with the action or listen to the commentary on its own -- it's entertaining either way!

To The Journey 132: Bear Hug

Star Trek Las Vegas 2015.

When it comes to Star Trek conventions, none is bigger and better than Star Trek Las Vegas. With Voyager's 20th anniversary as the main focus of the 2015 event, this was a party Char could not miss. In this episode of To The Journey, Char helps Tristan experience STLV 2015 vicariously by telling him all about what she did at the convention and what happened when the entire Voyager cast (sans Jennifer Lien) reunited for the first time since the show finished filming. Was it as amazing as Char hoped? Listen on and find out.

To The Journey 131: Army of Evil

Top Five Season Five Moments.

Like Voyager's fourth season, the fifth season was solid throughout. Standouts such as "Bride of Chaotica!," "Night," "Counterpoint," "Timeless," and several others really made this year of Voyager's journey home shine. In this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan slip into their Captain Proton cosplay and take on the painstaking task of choosing their top five moments from Season Five. With so many excellent moments to choose from, some were inevitably left out. Listen on and find out if your favorites made their lists.

To The Journey 130: Dust to Dust

"Ashes to Ashes" Rewrite.

Hey, do you remember that ensign who died three years ago? No? It's okay, neither do we. But guess what, she's back! And she looks nothing like her former self! What the heck is going on?

The above is the essential premise for "Ashes to Ashes," a Voyager Season Six story that had several interesting ideas behind it, but fell short of its potential. In this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan rewrite "Ashes to Ashes" and reveal how they would take this kernel of an idea and make it pop into something with more drama, emotion, and overall intrigue.

To The Journey 129: Alien Love

Top Five Tom/B'Elanna Moments.

Some couples were simply meant to be. That was the case for Tom and B'Elanna on Voyager, where a series of innocent flirtations eventually blossomed into a beautiful marriage that eventually included a child. It was one of the few couplings in Star Trek that was built to last and portrayed with realism. From hot 'n steamy romance to standing by their commitment to one another, Tom and B'Elanna had several relationship moments that fans enjoy. In this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan pare their favorite Paris/Torres moments down to just five and discuss them.

To The Journey 128: That or Nothing

"Rise" Commentary.

In this episode of To The Journey, Tristan and Char deliver a commentary on the often forgotten Season Three episode "Rise." From the moment Tuvok and Neelix met in "Caretaker," it was painfully obvious how different the two characters were. Tuvok was driven by logic and discipline, as is the Vulcan way. Neelix, however, often worked on gut instinct and had no problem improvising when necessary. Naturally, these differences caused friction when they worked together, such as in this episode. Who gets the last word? Listen on and find out.

To The Journey 127: Somebody's Nephew

Essential Voyager.

The episodic television format has its strengths and weaknesses. The advantage is that the viewer can tune into just about any episode, any time and enjoy it without having to know what happened in previous installments. The downside being that it's harder to build momentum with self-contained episodes. That means that some episodes will shine, while others downright stink. In this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan rip a page out of Standard Orbit's book and determine which episodes of Voyager Season One are required viewing. One by one, they review each episode and determine if it's vital Voyager or a waste of time. Listen on and find out how many episodes Char and Tristan kept or tossed out the airlock.

To The Journey 125: Cheater, Cheater

Top Five Season Four Moments.

Countless fans consider Voyager's fourth season the series' finest. With impressive installments such as "Message in a Bottle" and "Hope and Fear" and amazing two-parters like "Year of Hell" and "The Killing Game," it's no shock that Char and Tristan agonized over their lists of top Season Four moments from Voyager and miraculously narrowed their picks down to five* in this episode of To The Journey. Listen on and find out if your favorites made it to their final cut.

To The Journey 124: Coffee Ice Cream

"Extreme Risk" Rewrite.

When Char and Tristan choose an episode that deserves a rewrite, it's usually an episode with untapped potential. This time, things are different. In this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan rewrite "Extreme Risk" with one major change: Janeway takes B'Elanna's place as the character who's numbed from depression. Since Janeway was dealing with depression in "Night," Voyager's Season Five opener, it seemed natural fit to continue the storyline. "Extreme Risk" was an excellent episode as produced, so how much really changes when a different character has to deal with the same set of circumstances? Listen on and find out.

To The Journey 123: Something You Assimilated

What if Janeway Died, Part II.

WE LOVE JANEWAY! She is our captain! Please read on and listen.

Losing a main character on a Trek series is no small matter, but losing a captain would have been doubly problematic, had it happened. That's why Char and Tristan speculated what would have happened if Janeway had died in To The Journey 113, "Harry Gets Promoted." However, they only got through Season Three, which leaves four more years of "what ifs" to ponder. Have tissues at the ready, because in this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan pick up where they left off in TTJ 113 and discuss areas of seasons 5-7 where Janeway could have died and why.

To The Journey 122: Ohhhh My!

"Flashback" Commentary.

It's always sorrowful when we lose another member of the Trek family. When it happens, we pause to reflect and appreciate that person's contribution to the Star Trek universe. In this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan celebrate the life of Grace Lee Whitney, who died on May 1, 2015. She made her last appearance as Janice Rand on the Voyager Season Three episode "Flashback." Queue up the episode and watch along as Char and Tristan provide commentary.

To The Journey 121: Be Informed

"Emanations" and "Half a Life" Comparison.

We often watch Star Trek because it makes us ponder heavy topics. Certain episodes drive us to consider how we feel about life after death and the treatment of our elders as they require more help from others. In this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan discuss these themes as they compare Voyager's "Emanations" with TNG's "Half a Life." Each episode deals with ritual suicide from a slightly different angle. Listen on and find out what Char and Tristan think of these episodes, the messages contained therein, and whether they prefer one episode over the other.

To The Journey 120: After Dessert

Top Five Janeway/Chakotay Moments.

Behind a top-notch captain is always a top-notch first officer. Kirk and Spock shared a deep and intricate friendship that went far beyond duty. Picard and Riker always knew they could count on each other. Sisko and Kira used the differences in their points of view to see the bigger picture together and make well-rounded decisions. And Janeway had Chakotay, who was not just her first officer, but the person she eventually trusted most on the ship, developed a deep friendship with...and possibly more? The Voyager writers toyed with the idea of a Janeway/Chakotay romance when fans vocally took note of Mulgrew and Beltran's onscreen chemistry. Though the writers didn't fully go through with the idea, they gave the "J/Cers" moments that launched thousands of fanfics. In this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan list their top five Janeway/Chakotay relationshipper moments and try not to squee too much in the process.

To The Journey 118: Mr. 'I Can Leave My Ship'

Message in a Bottle Commentary.

With Char gone in the Delta Flyer, Tristan brings in his friend and Nerd Party Co-Host, Matt Hansen!  This week they riff on Season 4's "Message in a Bottle" with a joyous commentary track.

Andy Dick made his mark in Star Trek by being the comedic counter to our beloved Doctor. The two seemed perfect for each other as they galavanted across the beautiful and new U.S.S. Prometheus. Romulans get in the way, of course, like they always do.

Check out the hijinks that ensue as well as our take on them.

To The Journey 117: BridgeMates Rematch

BridgeMates Rematch.

In Earl Grey 82, "When in Doubt Choose Data," Char and Tristan emerged victorious in BridgeMates, the "how well do you know your cohost" game show. In this To The Journey/Earl Grey crossover, Phillip Gilfus reprises his role as game show host as once again Char and Tristan face off against Darren Moser and Daniel Proulx in a Voyager-style rematch. Listen on and find out if Team Lizard Babies remains the reigning BridgeMates champs or if Team Free Enterprise-A stole the title on Delta Quadrant turf.

To The Journey 116: This Man's My Friend

Top Five Season Three Moments.

Season Three of Voyager was filled to the brim with notable moments. A second appearance by Q, the solidification of Tom and Harry's bromance, The Doctor's holofamily, and eyebrow-raising dialogue between Kathy and Coco were just a few of the highlights of Voyager's third year. So, what's the cream of the crop? In this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan catalog their top five moments from Voyager's third season. Listen on and find out if one of your favorites made the cut.

To The Journey 115: See It On-Screen

A Voyager Prequel/Sequel.

When a franchise is successful, it's only natural that fans and producers alike want more of it. Sometimes a spinoff show is a raging success, like Better Call Saul, the prequel to Breaking Bad. Then there are those other times when the expansion of a popular fandom doesn't measure up to what came before. The Star Trek spinoffs that came after TOS aren't immune from such scrutiny.  It is also a foregone conclusion that any future Trek show will also face the same fate. In this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan disclose their ideas for an installment of the Star Trek franchise that would serve as a prequel or sequel to Star Trek: Voyager.

NOTE: This podcast contains spoilers for the novels that take place after Voyager gets home.

To The Journey 114: I.S.S. Intrepid

Voyager in the Mirror Universe.

The closest Voyager ever got to a Mirror Universe episode was "Living Witness," which portrayed the crew as ruthless toward those it encountered, and with quicker tendencies toward violence. Despite these similarities, this depiction was actually a historically inaccurate portrayal of Voyager's actions in the Delta Quadrant. This episode whet the appetites of many Voyager fans and served as a sampler of what the Mirror Universe might have been like. In this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan take up the suggestion of several listeners and set the stage for what might have transpired in the Delta Quadrant Mirror Universe.

To The Journey 113: Harry Gets Promoted

What if Janeway Died?

When it came to her crew, Captain Janeway would do anything to protect their safety...including sacrificing her own life. What if, on one of the many occasions where her life was in imminent danger, she really died and the Magic Reset Button was broken? Char and Tristan consider the numerous developments that would have happened to Voyager — both onboard the ship and in the series overall — as a result of Captain Janeway's demise before the end of their seven-year journey.

To The Journey 112: Do We Need the Kids?

"Collective" Rewrite.

Children on Star Trek has always been a mixed bag. The Borg kids, whom we first meet in Voyager's sixth season episode "Collective," are no different. In this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan attempt an assimilation of "Collective" in hopes of bringing it closer to perfection...or a rewrite, at least. They debate the usefulness of the Borg kids on Voyager, rave about how the episode excels visually, and discuss what changes they think would have made "Collective" an episode that even the Borg Queen would approve of.

To The Journey 111: Heaven and Gre'Thor

The Afterlife.

Star Trek has never shied away from topics with no definitive answer, and therefore neither does To The Journey. In this episode, Char and Tristan undertake the episodes of Voyager that dealt with the possible afterlife. They examine several interpretations of where we might go after death, from The Great Forest to Gre'Thor — but be wary, for aliens living in another dimension could be lurking and waiting for the perfect moment to eat your soul!

To The Journey 110: Who Hurt Him?

Missing Voyager Flashbacks.

The recipe for Star Trek success has a few key ingredients: thought-provoking sci-fi stories, social commentary embedded in said stories, epic space battles, and memorable characters. And when it comes to characters, we as fans don't ever get enough of our favorites. In this episode of To The Journey, Char and Earl Grey co-host Phillip Gilfus talk about missing character flashbacks they wanted to see on Voyager. Listen on and find out if Phillip is as infatuated with B'Elanna Torres as Tristan, the potential problems associated with parenting in the 24th century, and what missing scene might have given Neelix and Kes' romance more credibility.

To The Journey 108: Klingons in France

The Killing Game, Part II Commentary.

Star Trek two-part episodes tend to be known for a strong first half and weak conclusion. That is not the case when it comes to "The Killing Game," the second two-parter of Voyager Season Four. Despite starting with only a quarter of an hour of material for the second half, the writers pulled this one together with a nice mix of drama, humor, social commentary, and a controversial conclusion that led to repercussions later in the series. Char and Tristan conclude their commentary of "The Killing Game" in this episode of To The Journey. Topics discussed touch on which side of the resistance they'd want to be on, Tommy's lexicon, what Jeri Ryan was contemplating on the rainy set, and Ethan Phillips' survival of Talaxian *and* Klingon makeup.

To The Journey 107: My Prey's B.O.

The Killing Game, Part I Commentary.

After the cast and crew poured their hearts into the epic "Year of Hell" in Voyager's fourth season, it wouldn't have surprised anyone had Voyager steered clear of two-parters for the remainder of the season. However, the exhausted cast and crew went for it and gave us "The Killing Game," and pulled it off with gusto. Join Tristan and Char as they discuss World War II authenticity, Neelix on a bike, exploding holodecks, and much more in their commentary of "The Killing Game, Part I" in this episode of To The Journey.

To The Journey 106: Pyrokinesis

"Cold Fire" rewrite.

The time has come again when Char and Tristan pick an episode of Voyager and give it a little TLC. This time, it's Season Two's "Cold Fire," where Voyager encounters the Caretaker's mate, Susperia, and a group of Ocampans who have embraced and honed their telekinetic abilities. Let us not forget the bonus of Kes accidentally boiling Tuvok. Listen on and find out what Char and Tristan would have kept in, removed, and how they would have transformed "Cold Fire" into a less contrived story and a more compelling hour of television.

To The Journey 105: Don't Forget the Orchid

"Tuvix" and "Similitude" Comparison.

There are times when an idea is so good that you can't use it just once...right? Intentionally or not, the Trek writers have used similar plots for episodes of different series. Case in point: Enterprise's "Similitude" and Voyager's "Tuvix." Both spawn controversy about one's right to live, even if it means sacrificing another. The captains — Janeway and Archer — face grueling decisions surrounding that debate. Each circumstance ends with the death of someone. In this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan compare the similarities and differences between "Tuvix" and "Similitude" and determine if one episode executes the story better than the other.

To The Journey 104: Power Couple

The Voyager Reunion.

It's deplorable that we did not see what happened to the Voyager crew after they returned home. Yes, we got a glimpse of a reunion in "Endgame," but Admiral Janeway eradicated that future. So, what would the intrepid crew be up to in the canon universe we know and love? In this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan share their speculations on what each member of the crew could potentially be doing and where they might be living their lives 10 years after Voyager's triumphant return home.

Trek Through the Tough Times.

All of our lives are full of ups and downs. Though our minds gravitate towards looking back at the good times, the tougher times often equally affect who we become. Listen in as they ponder Robert Beltran's true hair color; Borg skeletal structure; Janeway and Chakotay's after-dinner "dessert"; who named Captain LaForge's ship, the Challenger; and so much more.

To The Journey 98: 99% Sexy Time

Remember Rewrite.

Episode quality varies greatly in Voyager's body of work, ranging from exceptional to downright pitiful. Most episodes fall somewhere in between these extremes, and they are the best candidates for a TTJ-style facelift.

In this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan share their ideas for how they would bring more life to Voyager's "Remember," a Season-Three story where the romance of Romeo and Juliet collides with the genocide that occurred during World War II. We also briefly discuss Born With Teeth, Kate Mulgrew's memoir, which will be published in April 2015. The audio clip inserted in this episode is from TotallyKate.com.

To The Journey 97: Creepy Maternal Figure

The Borg Queen.

She is the beginning, the end, the one who is many. After she was unveiled in Star Trek: First Contact, it seemed inevitable that the Borg Queen would make an appearance on an episode, or several, of Voyager. And make an appearance she did. In this episode of To The Journey, Charlynn and Tristan dig beyond the Borg Queen's presence on Voyager and ponder her origin, discuss the elements that shaped the character, and speculate on how exactly one being controls a Collective of billions and keeps it all together.

To The Journey 96: Measure of a Hologram

Author, Author and The Measure of a Man Comparison.

With hundreds of hours of Trek under the writers' belts by the time Voyager arrived, it was no wonder that some stories brought about a feeling of deja vu. "Recycled plots" aren't necessarily a bad thing when they're given a new spin, and that's exactly what the writers did with Voyager's "Author, Author"—they took the insightful and compelling message from TNG's "The Measure of a Man" and gave it a holographic twist. In this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan examine these two episodes' similarities, differences, and determine if one surpasses the other.

To The Journey 95: Tickle Your Ears with Magic

The Raven Commentary.

It's a bird! Check. It's a shuttlecraft! Check. It's a… Borg? Also check. When Seven of Nine find the wreckage of small science vessel she and her parents called home before being assimilated, she begins having hallucinations that seem to be calling her back to the Collective. "The Raven" began as the story of Seven's reactivation as a drone but became one that shed light on how she was assimilated in the first place.

In this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan take you through the season-four episode as they discuss big black birds, eating lessons, and the difficult aliens-of-the-week who coveted Jake Sisko's vests so much that they adapted them into jumpsuits.

To The Journey 94: Kept the Panting

Trek Actors Directing Voyager.

Most Trek actors gained their notoriety in pop culture from their roles on their respective series. However, for some, their involvement in Star Trek didn't end in front of the camera. Several Trek actors from TNG, DS9 and VOY went to "Trek Directing School," did their homework, and eventually made their directorial debut on a Star Trek TV series. For Jonathan Frakes, Robert Duncan McNeill, LeVar Burton, and Roxann Dawson, this experience paved the way for directing careers after Trek. In this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan talk about the Trek actors who directed episodes of Voyager.

To The Journey 93: Channeling the Mulgrew

Ultimate Season Seven Marathon.

When Voyager entered its seventh season, it was accepted that it would be the show's last. With both TNG and DS9 setting the precedent for a seven season run, Voyager naturally followed suit. The season was fraught, however, with ups and downs — in part due to several years and hundreds of episodes of Star Trek that had aired by this time. Then there was also the specter of Enterprise already on the horizon. In the end, season seven as a whole felt weaker in comparison to some of its predecessors and didn't bestow the swan song that most fans were looking for.

In this last installment of To The Journey's ultimate season marathon series, Char and Tristan reveal their picks for a Voyager Season Seven marathon. As TNG said, "All good things must come to an end."

To The Journey 92: BA XO

Most Memorable One-Liners.

One thing all Star Trek fans can agree on is that each show has its fair share of brilliant one-liners. Whether it's profound words coming from Spock or a snarky retort from The Doctor, every series has a variety of notable quotes. In this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan divulge just a few of the Voyager one-liners they consider the most enduring. In the interest of keeping the podcast at its usual length, they stopped at five apiece, but could have easily traded examples of the witty remarks all day.

To The Journey 91: More Hot Pockets!
Cast Crossovers.

Characters crossing over from one Star Trek show to the next happened rarely, but it did happen—even to the point of bringing well-established characters from one show and turning them into main characters on another. For instance, both Miles O'Brien and Worf jumped from TNG to DS9 and became pivotal characters, with more depth as a result. In this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan contemplate who they would have brought from TNG or DS9 onto Voyager and how that change would affect the Star Trek universe at large. No matter the scenario, crossover potential is huge, so listen on as Char and Tristan explore the possibilities.

To The Journey 89: Amnesia Love Story

Unforgettable Rewrite.

Chakotay-centric episodes rarely make fans' lists of favorites. Whether it's the writing, story, or the performance, they just don't stand out. For Char and Tristan, the ill-designated "Unforgettable" from Season Four tends to be just the opposite of what the title implies. In this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan share their thoughts on how they would make "Unforgettable" a bit more indelible. Listen on and find out what they liked, what they didn't, and how they would bolster this episode so that it would live up to its title.

To The Journey 88: Eddy from Boston

Real Life Commentary.

No matter the situation, having a family comes with challenges. The Doctor finds this out when he creates a holographic family and plunges right into family life. In this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan watch as B'Elanna visits The Doctor's family and is sickened by its saccharine-sweet harmony. She reprograms the family's subroutines into something more "realistic," involving wretched Klingon music, crying kids, and life-ending injuries. Listen on and find out if Char and Tristan think what happens in this episode is an accurate portrayal of family life and whether or not they'd like to live in The Doctor's artsy suburban house on the Holodeck.

To the Journey 87: Timmy Likes Phasers

Introducing Kids to Voyager.

When asking fellow fans how long they've been watching Star Trek, "I've been watching it since I was a kid" is a common response. Many of us became cognizant of Star Trek when we were quite young. The franchise means a great deal to us as we grew up with it. Now those of us with children are introducing Star Trek to our kids, in hopes of propagating the next generation of Star Trek fans.

In this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan take a suggestion from a listener and name the top five episodes of Voyager they would show to a young child, in hopes that they would be intrigued and entertained but not be subjected to content that would push the rating above PG.

To The Journey 86: Slowly Adding the Grit

Voyager in Today's TV Environment.

When Voyager premiered in 1995, it launched with the fanfare of the much-hyped United Paramount Network. Almost 20 years later, UPN is now defunct and the landscape of television production has changed drastically. Major networks must not only compete with cable, but also with streaming services, such as Netflix, that have added a new dimension of how, when, and which shows are available to the masses.

In this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan discuss how Voyager might look and feel had it never aired in 1995 and was being produced for a 2015 release instead. They ponder the differences between how a major broadcasting company might produce the show compared to a cable network like AMC. They also imagine how fans would rabidly binge-watch a new Trek show on Netflix and how this would benefit the Star Trek community at large. Listen and find out if Char and Tristan think that the success of Cosmos would help a Star Trek series return to network TV, or if Voyager would have been in better company in the sexy and violent realms of HBO and Cinemax.

To The Journey 85: Pwning the Voyager

Rumored Voyager Episode Ideas.

People will say anything on the Internet. That's its beauty and its downfall. It's also why it's rarely wise to believe everything you read—because most of it probably isn't completely true. However, in this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan ignore their better instincts and discuss a list of rumored Voyager episode ideas that circulated the Internet in 1997 and 1998. Some ideas sound vaguely familiar, probably because they did eventually turn into aired episodes. For others, Char and Tristan are glad the writers dropped the notion. Still, the list includes a couple of gems that didn't make it on the show; and that's just tragic. Listen on and find out what the Voyager writers might have been considering for episodes in Seasons Three and Four.

To the Journey 84: Even Nerds Can Be Fit

Voyager as the "Soundtrack to Your Life."

Star Trek fans are well known for their loyalty to the franchise, and their devotion is a part of why the shows still have life today. Many fans started watching some incarnation of Trek at a young age and will remain fans for life. Tristan and Char are no different, and in this episode of To The Journey they talk about how their teenage years were influenced by Voyager. We discuss some of our favorite memories of how Voyager came to be intertwined with their life experiences (and vice-versa) and became a part of the "soundtrack to their lives." Listen on and hear about how "Threshold" influenced Char's life (no, really), find out which episode resonates with Tristan as the point when he knew he was locked in as a Trek fan, and much more.

To The Journey 83: Up Against a Wall

Janeway's Worst Command Decisions.

With four pips comes enormous responsibility. This is an attribute that all of the captains in Star Trek, from James T. Kirk to Benjamin Sisko, have come to understand. The well-being of the crew and ship hangs in the balance with every decision made. Actions will affect not only the crew, but possibly impact entire civilizations—or in Captain Kathryn Janeway's case, an entire quadrant. Janeway faced this task without the help or, perhaps at times, the hindrance of Starfleet Command and the Federation. While she did perform well under pressure most of the time, she is human and therefore fallible. Did Captain Janeway accomplish the most favorable outcome for Voyager and her crew or was the Delta Quadrant truly her Kobayashi Maru?

In this episode of To The Journey, Charlynn and Tristan discuss which of Janeway's command decisions were amongst her worst or most questionable. Should she have booted Neelix from the ship at the end of "Caretaker?" Was giving the Hirogen holographic technology Janeway's only option for ending the conflict in "The Killing Game"? Listen on and find out what Char and Tristan think of these moments and more.
