Remember Rewrite.

Episode quality varies greatly in Voyager's body of work, ranging from exceptional to downright pitiful. Most episodes fall somewhere in between these extremes, and they are the best candidates for a TTJ-style facelift.

In this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan share their ideas for how they would bring more life to Voyager's "Remember," a Season-Three story where the romance of Romeo and Juliet collides with the genocide that occurred during World War II. The Borg Queen.

She is the beginning, the end, the one who is many. After she was unveiled in Star Trek: First Contact, it seemed inevitable that the Borg Queen would make an appearance on an episode, or several, of Voyager. And make an appearance she did. Author, Author and The Measure of a Man Comparison.

With hundreds of hours of Trek under the writers' belts by the time Voyager arrived, it was no wonder that some stories brought about a feeling of deja vu. "Recycled plots" aren't necessarily a bad thing when they're given a new spin, and that's exactly what the writers did with Voyager's "Author, Author"—they took the insightful and compelling message from TNG's "The Measure of a Man" and gave it a holographic twist. The Raven Commentary.

Trek Actors Directing Voyager. 

Most Trek actors gained their notoriety in pop culture from their roles on their respective series. However, for some, their involvement in Star Trek didn't end in front of the camera. Several Trek actors from TNG, DS9 and VOY went to "Trek Directing School," did their homework, and eventually made their directorial debut on a Star Trek TV series. For Jonathan Frakes, Robert Duncan McNeill, LeVar Burton, and Roxann Dawson, this experience paved the way for directing careers after Trek. In this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan talk about the Trek actors who directed episodes of Voyager.

Ultimate Season Seven Marathon.

When Voyager entered its seventh season, it was accepted that it would be the show's last. With both TNG and DS9 setting the precedent for a seven season run, Voyager naturally followed suit. The season was fraught, however, with ups and downs — in part due to several years and hundreds of episodes of Star Trek that had aired by this time. Then there was also the specter of Enterprise already on the horizon. In the end, season seven as a whole felt weaker in comparison to some of its predecessors and didn't bestow the swan song that most fans were looking for.

In this last installment of To The Journey's ultimate season marathon series, Char and Tristan reveal their picks for a Voyager Season Seven marathon. As TNG said, "All good things must come to an end."

Most Memorable One-Liners.

One thing all Star Trek fans can agree on is that each show has its fair share of brilliant one-liners. Whether it's profound words coming from Spock or a snarky retort from The Doctor, every series has a variety of notable quotes. In this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan divulge just a few of the Voyager one-liners they consider the most enduring. In the interest of keeping the podcast at its usual length, they stopped at five apiece, but could have easily traded examples of the witty remarks all day.

Real Life Commentary. 

No matter the situation, having a family comes with challenges. The Doctor finds this out when he creates a holographic family and plunges right into family life. In this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan watch as B'Elanna visits The Doctor's family and is sickened by its saccharine-sweet harmony. She reprograms the family's subroutines into something more "realistic," involving wretched Klingon music, crying kids, and life-ending injuries. Introducing Kids to Voyager.

When asking fellow fans how long they've been watching Star Trek, "I've been watching it since I was a kid" is a common response. Many of us became cognizant of Star Trek when we were quite young. The franchise means a great deal to us as we grew up with it. Now those of us with children are introducing Star Trek to our kids, in hopes of propagating the next generation of Star Trek fans. 

In this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan take a suggestion from a listener and name the top five episodes of Voyager they would show to a young child, in hopes that they would be intrigued and entertained but not be subjected to content that would push the rating above PG.

Voyager in Today's TV Environment.

When Voyager premiered in 1995, it launched with the fanfare of the much-hyped United Paramount Network. Almost 20 years later, UPN is now defunct and the landscape of television production has changed drastically. Major networks must not only compete with cable, but also with streaming services, such as Netflix, that have added a new dimension of how, when, and which shows are available to the masses. 

In this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan discuss how Voyager might look and feel had it never aired in 1995 and was being produced for a 2015 release instead. They ponder the differences between how a major broadcasting company might produce the show compared to a cable network like AMC. They also imagine how fans would rabidly binge-watch a new Trek show on Netflix and how this would benefit the Star Trek community at large. Rumored Voyager Episode Ideas.

People will say anything on the Internet. That's its beauty and its downfall. It's also why it's rarely wise to believe everything you read—because most of it probably isn't completely true. However, in this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan ignore their better instincts and discuss a list of rumored Voyager episode ideas that circulated the Internet in 1997 and 1998. Some ideas sound vaguely familiar, probably because they did eventually turn into aired episodes. For others, Char and Tristan are glad the writers dropped the notion. Voyager as the "Soundtrack to Your Life."

Star Trek fans are well known for their loyalty to the franchise, and their devotion is a part of why the shows still have life today. Many fans started watching some incarnation of Trek at a young age and will remain fans for life. Tristan and Char are no different, and in this episode of To The Journey they talk about how their teenage years were influenced by Voyager. We discuss some of our favorite memories of how Voyager came to be intertwined with their life experiences (and vice-versa) and became a part of the "soundtrack to their lives." Listen on and hear about how "Threshold" influenced Char's life (no, really), find out which episode resonates with Tristan as the point when he knew he was locked in as a Trek fan, and much more.

Janeway's Worst Command Decisions.

With four pips comes enormous responsibility. This is an attribute that all of the captains in Star Trek, from James T. Kirk to Benjamin Sisko, have come to understand. The well-being of the crew and ship hangs in the balance with every decision made. Actions will affect not only the crew, but possibly impact entire civilizations—or in Captain Kathryn Janeway's case, an entire quadrant. Janeway faced this task without the help or, perhaps at times, the hindrance of Starfleet Command and the Federation. While she did perform well under pressure most of the time, she is human and therefore fallible. Did Captain Janeway accomplish the most favorable outcome for Voyager and her crew or was the Delta Quadrant truly her Kobayashi Maru?

In this episode of To The Journey, Charlynn and Tristan discuss which of Janeway's command decisions were amongst her worst or most questionable. Should she have booted Neelix from the ship at the end of "Caretaker?" Was giving the Hirogen holographic technology Janeway's only option for ending the conflict in "The Killing Game"? Persistence of Vision Commentary.

In this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan break out the coffee ice cream and do a commentary for Season Two's "Persistence of Vision." Topics include the numerous times The Doctor got shrunk, Neelix's meal serving schedule, Chakotay's disappearance in the turbolift, the numerous angles in which we see the Bun of Steel, and, of course, Torres's "sweet dream" of making out with Chakotay and how that wasn't awkward or weird at all. They aren't sure, but this might have all been a hallucination.

Ultimate Season Six Marathon.

It's a lazy Sunday afternoon. You have absolutely nothing to do, nowhere to be. How do you spend this time? Chances are, you do what Char and Tristan do, and that is watch several episodes of Star Trek. In this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan talk about which episodes they would pick for an ultimate Voyager Season Six marathon. Their picks aren't necessarily their favorites, nor are they in any particular order. Instead, they are selections for a superior marathon overall. Which episodes made their lists? Listen on and find out.

Alpha Quadrant Characters/Actors.

For a ship that was stuck in the Delta Quadrant, Voyager had a decent amount of crossover with characters we knew in the Alpha Quadrant. On top of that, Star Trek often used a roster of regular guest actors for both one-off roles and recurring appearances. Some of these faces familiar to us were well-known at the time while others' careers took off after appearing on Star Trek. Some are known because they were on Star Trek! In this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan discuss Alpha Quadrant actors and characters they wish would have made an appearance on Star Trek: Voyager. Which actor from Babylon 5 did Char want to see on Voyager? How would Tristan have put an X-Files actor on the show? Listen on and find out.

Displaced Rewrite.

Not all Voyager episodes are winners. Some are downright ugly and others are forgettably mediocre. Season Three's "Displaced" fits the latter, and in this episode of To The Journey Charlynn and Tristan give this story a rewrite. Both agree that the episode needed better action sequences and more of them, but differ on who should save the ship. Did Char appreciate the rarely seen "Action Chakotay!" sequences and want more of them? Did Tristan find yet another way to bring the monkey from "Resolutions" into the mix? Listen on and find out what they would have done to improved "Displaced."

Friendships.

In the hostile Delta Quadrant, Voyager and her crew were often on their own. This isolation not only united Starfleet and Maquis crews, but it spawned several friendships and a family dynamic that thrived throughout the series. In this episode of To The Journey, Charlynn and Tristan talk about some of their favorite friendships on Voyager including why the show should have had more Janeway and Tuvok moments, why Harry ultimately became the third wheel when romance sparked between Tom and B'Elanna, The Doctor's longing for quality time with the captain, and much more. Threshold Commentary. 

No Star Trek show is immune from its share of "stinker" episodes, but few are of such ill-repute that the writer eventually strikes them from canon. "Threshold" is such an episode, and despite its unpopular status among the masses, Char and Tristan actually enjoy watching it. And in this episode of To The Journey they do just that as well as comment, laugh, cry, lose tongues, spawn, and more. It's like they experience the entire universe in this one episode. Listen on and find out why Char and Tristan love to love the episode that everybody loves to hate.

Character Deaths.

Starfleet officers know that they risk death every time they put on the uniform, but some seem to face it more than others. This goes double for our beloved crew in the Delta Quadrant. In this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan discuss the numerous and varied ways the Voyager crew died, nearly died, or wanted to die. And no, this is not all about Harry Kim, who is often regarded as Voyager's counterpart to Kenny on South Park. In fact, Char and Tristan compile a list of how many times each character died, and the results don't tally quite as expected. Who topped the list? Who died the least? Listen on and find out.

Casting Voyager with Larry Nemecek.

1994 was an incredibly busy year for Star Trek. Upon the conclusion of TNG's seventh season, the cast and crew went straight into production for Star Trek Generations. On top of that and the third season of DS9, they were also starting production on Voyager. And, as many fans know, the fallout with Genevieve Bujold added uncertainty as to whether a woman would stay in the center seat, putting other character roles in jeopardy—on a production timeline that was already behind schedule. In this episode of To The Journey, Charlynn talks with guest Larry Nemecek about the crazy circumstances that surrounded the casting of Voyager. Who was a lock for their role? Drone Commentary. 

In 2014, where serialized storytelling is the norm on TV, sometimes a self-contained episode is refreshing. Voyager's “Drone” fits that bill with its concise beginning, middle, and end—all in 45 satisfying minutes. In this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan bring you a commentary for the fifth-season episode “Drone.” We discuss 29th Century Borg attire, the merits of episodic television done right, and how Jeri Ryan’s phenomenal performance episode gives us all the feels.

Ultimate Season Five Marathon. 

Many fans would agree that it took a couple of seasons for each of the TNG-era Star Trek shows to hit their stride. By seasons four and five, however, the shows were hitting their peak with consistently high-quality episodes. Voyager isn't an exception to this trend, and in this week's To The Journey, Char and Tristan discuss the difficulty of choosing only five episodes for a season five marathon. In this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan rewrite Voyager's "Darkling" from Season Three. They agree that letting The Doctor "try on" new personalities is fun and describe how they would more effectively let Robert Picardo chew the scenery. They also discuss how they would rshape Kes' romance into a deeper and more meaningful B-plot.

Finding the perfect actress to play the role of Janeway was a long and difficult process— especially after the first pick, Genevieve Bujold, quit after two days of shooting. Thankfully, you don't have a backup module like the Doctor does.  In this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan do their own live commentary for the season four episode "Living Witness." They talk about pilgrim fashion sense, the correct pronunciation of our peppered XO’s name, and, of course, the importance of revisionist history. So sit back, relax, and pop in your DVD… do it!

The Talaxians.

They're cooks, traders, smugglers, warriors, and narcotics dealers—just like us! We don't hear about Talaxian culture in much detail over the course of Voyager, but in this episode of To The Journey Char and Tristan get down to the nitty gritty on what it means to always have an X in your name. Sometimes she listened to the Peppered XO… and other times she didn’t. In this episode of To The Journey we talk about her BEST command decisions and why we appreciate how she had to make them. But don’t worry, folks, we’ll talk about her worst ones soon.

Voyager on Blu-ray.

It was a bit of a surprise when CBS announced that Star Trek: The Next Generation would receive an HD “makeover” due to the amount of work involved. However, these Blu-rays have fast become fan favorites, and now it seems likely that every Trek incarnation will eventually be released in this format. In this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan discuss which episode moments they most look forward to seeing in HD, as well as extras they want in addition to the episodes. Oh, and Char blows Tristan’s mind at one point in this episode.

The Borg.

We have engaged… the Borg… on To The Journey! The TTJ crew has been waiting so long to get to this episode, and this week we delve into the big baddies of the Delta Quadrant—the Borg. Char and Tristan talk about multiple Queens, mysteries of the Collective, and if the Borg were overused. Resolutions Rewrite.

Thousands of Voyager fans have written Janeway/Chakotay fanfic to rework “Resolutions” to their liking. And in this episode of To The Journey, Tristan and Char join in. Tristan goes for the Harlequin romance angle, while Char doesn’t stop at just one episode and instead writes a three-part epic.
