Seven of Nine in Star Trek: Picard, Season 1. Fans of Star Trek: Voyager were excited to see the return of Seven of Nine to the Star Trek universe in the first season of Star Trek: Picard. The Seven of Nine that we see in Star Trek: Picard, however, is quite different than the Seven of Nine we are accustomed to from Star Trek: Voyager. From Borg drone to member of the Voyager crew to Fenris Ranger, hosts Zachary Fruhling, Suzanne Williamson, and Liam Smart discuss Seven of Nine's overall character arc and the differences between her appearances in Star Trek: Voyager and the first season of Star Trek: Picard. Things We Love and Hate about Neelix. Like many fans of Star Trek: Voyager, we have a love/hate relationship with the character of Neelix. His use as comic relief in the early seasons of Voyager is simultaneously both brilliant and groan-worthy, and it helped to establish the overall tone of Voyager as a fairly lighthearted installment of the overall Star Trek franchise. But while Neelix developed into a character with remarkable depth and subtlety, he is also not without his character flaws and faults. In this episode of To The Journey, hosts Zachary Fruhling and Suzanne Williamson discuss the things they love and hate about the character of Neelix. Chapters Hosts Production |

We Need to Talk about Chakotay. Unquestionably the character of Commander Chakotay was underutilized in Star Trek: Voyager. But beyond merely being underutilized, some Star Trek fans have developed a form of loathing for Commander Chakotay, partly because of his nonplussed demeanor and partly because of his amalgam of stereotypes about Native American beliefs and spirituality. In this episode of To The Journey, hosts Zachary Fruhling, Kay Shaw, and Suzanne Williamson come racing to Commander Chakotay's defense with a discussion of what they love about, and what was done right with Voyager's intrepid first officer. Counselor Troi in Voyager. Some fans of Star Trek: The Next Generation who didn't follow Voyager's seven-year trek home from the Delta Quadrant may not realize that Marina Sirtis reprised her role as Counselor Deanna Troi in three different episode of Star Trek: Voyager. Some people even (audaciously) maintain that Counselor Troi was a more sophisticated and effective counselor in Voyager as she counseled her colleague and friend, Lieutenant Reginald Barclay, than she was in Star Trek: The Next Generation.

Vorik Character Analysis. Tuvok wasn't the only Vulcan aboard Voyager. In contrast to Tuvok's elder-statesman Vulcan persona was the more youthful and more enthusiastic Ensign Vorik. Being a youthful Vulcan, however, is not without its challenges. Your first Pon Farr can be especially disorienting when lost in the Delta Quadrant, 70,000 light years from the nearest Vulcan female. Just ask the apple of Vorik's eye and the object of his chemical-imbalanced affection, Lieutenant Torres. In this episode of To The Journey, hosts Kay Shaw and Zachary Fruhling scratch the Vulcan seven-year itch with a character analysis of Ensign Vorik, including his internalization of Tom Paris's 20th-century advice not to lose one's Vulcan cool.

Lieutenant Carey Character Analysis. Recurring character Lieutenant Joe Carey may have met an untimely demise in the seventh-season Voyager episode "Friendship One," just missing the ride back home to the Alpha Quadrant in "Endgame." But the mild-mannered Starfleet engineer, with hair ever-so-slightly reminiscent of Chief O'Brien's, made a big impression on Voyagerfans, despite appearing in relatively few episodes of Voyager.

Lon Suder. It's Murder on the Delta Quadrant Express! The second-season Voyager episode "Meld" may not have been much of a murder mystery, since the whodunnit is resolved so quickly. "Meld," however, introduced us to one of the most memorable characters in all of Star Trek: Voyager, the not-quite-empathetic and disturbingly intense Betazoid, crewman Lon Suder. In this episode of To The Journey, hosts Kay Shaw, Suzanne Williamson, and Zachary Fruhling, along with Lieutenant Tuvok, take a deep dive inside the mind of Lon Suder. Do they find that everyone contains a tiny bit of Lon Suder inside? And is every Lon Suder perhaps really a mild-mannered botanist at heart? Chapters

The Borg Queen. She is the beginning, the end, the one who is many. After she was unveiled in Star Trek: First Contact, it seemed inevitable that the Borg Queen would make an appearance on an episode, or several, of Voyager. And make an appearance she did. In this episode of To The Journey, Charlynn and Tristan dig beyond the Borg Queen's presence on Voyager and ponder her origin, discuss the elements that shaped the character, and speculate on how exactly one being controls a Collective of billions and keeps it all together.

Casting Could-Have-Beens. Finding the perfect actress to play the role of Janeway was a long and difficult process— especially after the first pick, Genevieve Bujold, quit after two days of shooting. In this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan talk about several people who auditioned for Janeway, as well as others who auditioned for main roles. Could you imagine the series being helmed by Lindsay Crouse, Patty Duke, or Joanna Cassidy? What about Claudia Christian as Seven of Nine? Listen on as Tristan and Char imagine the possibilities. |

Q. He started off as the veritable "bad boy" of the universe and the king of mischief on TNG, but some argue that he didn't exactly stay that way. In this episode of To The Journey, Charlynn and Tristan are visited by the folks from Earl Grey and finish their discussion of Q with a look at his appearances on Voyager. Both crews argue the merits and faults of "Death Wish," "The Q and the Grey," and "Q2." *FINGER SNAP followed by WHOOSH* |

Seska. She wasn’t a main character, but Seska caused a lot of trouble for the Voyager crew. In this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan discuss all things about the Cardassian who initially hid behind a Bajoran mask, from her impulsive alliance with Maje Culluh to post-mortem appearances in seasons three and seven. Oh, and let’s not forget all the things she did to Chakotay. Listen on as Char and Tristan dissect this master manipulator. |

Samantha and Naomi Wildman. In this episode of To The Journey we continue our character analysis series with our favorite Katarian and her mom. Even though Naomi only had nineteen appearances, she made quite an impact on Voyager. She most definitely won the award for Least Annoying Kid on Star Trek. Tristan enjoyed the many versions of Naomi, Char cringed at her long gestation and horrifying birth, and Lorrie thought the writers just forgot about impregnating Samantha altogether. How do you feel about the pint-sized Captain’s assistant? |

The Doctor. Some characters stand out more than others in the Trek universe; and Voyager’s Doctor is one of them. In this episode of To The Journey we discuss the reasons why he is so memorable, from his extensive development throughout Voyager's seven-year journey to Robert Picardo's distinctive performance. We also discuss the list of names Doc tried but ultimately dumped. Char’s favorite is Schweitzer, while Tristan thinks he should have chosen Batman. Which name would you have chosen for The Doctor? |

Kes. Our next character analysis takes us to the lovely underground home of the Ocampa and its gift to Voyager, Kes. In this episode of To The Journey as we explore the pixie’s life from her introduction in “Caretaker” to her departure in “The Gift.” All of us agree we love her spirit and taste for exploration, and that the writers of Voyager should have used her more often. Char loves her dishing out the snark to the Doctor, Tristan loves her backwards kangaroo maternity clothes, and Lorrie thinks her telekinetic powers should have been used to do cooler things that just melting Tuvok’s face. What did you like about Kes? |

Neelix. What’s the Delta Quadrant’s answer to Siri and Google Maps? Why Neelix, of course! The king of the leola root is not many a Star Trek fan’s favorite, but we all agree he was a necessity to the Voyager crew. In this episode of To The Journey we take a close look at Janeway’s Sacajawea. Lorrie likes his “ask forgiveness, not permission” attitude, Char liked him when he wore spaghetti, and Tristan just generally likes him. How do you feel about the “bar rodent”? |

Seven of Nine. Voyager’s resident Borg is next up on our continuing character analysis. Her introduction radically changed the landscape of the show, bringing the character into the spotlight time and time again. We discover that Char wanted Seven to go grunge, Lorrie enjoyed her “Borgness,” and Tristan still harbors a secret cardboard standup of her in a closet in his parent’s home. Were you able to resist or was it just futile? |
